Hi,
I have a PLOMB 5265 3/8" Breaker. It also has stamped on it P.W.A.1397. Can anyone tell me what the P.W.A. is for? I've seen other examples but no explanation.

I would guess they were made for PWA and given specific part numbers so PWA can issue and track them to their factory employees. Just a guess. Plus Plomb would know they were PWA tools when returned for warranty.

The engine manuals have PWA tools listed under 'specialty tools' that you are meant to buy from PWA to perform the task. Not saying that that breaker bar is one of them, but there's a LOT of very specialized PWA tools out there (and they make snap-on look reasonable).

The Ranger tools were made for the Ranger Engines Division of the Fairchild Engine & Aircraft Corporation...

The three items on the left with the teeth are for intake pipe packing nuts on the radial engines. A flat rubber packing ring is squeezed by a nut that has teeth to match those on the tool. The radius of the tool matches the OD of the pipe. A sturdy 3/8" drive extension is used with a T-handle or breaker bar to apply the torque. The three sizes here are for different size engines. Some of these worked on more than one engine.

These sturdy 3/8" extensions are also used with the two notched "sockets" to the right of the packing nut wrenches. The notched end is slipped over the valve end of the rocker arm and pulled to rock the arm away from the push rod so it can be removed.

The curved box-end wrench with the 3/8" drive is for removing the numerous nuts that hold the cylinders to the crankcase. It is offset to clear the cooling fins on the barrel of the cylinder and also the much larger cylinder head. This is a field repair level tool. The major overhaul tools were made so you could use a torque wrench with them.

While I kind of recognize the other two tools, I'm not sure enough to comment on them. I worked mostly on P&W R-985 and R-1830 engines, and a little on R-2800's.

If you ever get a chance to take a ride in an old radial-engined airplane, don't pass it up. The sounds and sensations are so much different from modern jets it will be a big treat.
