I know a lot of you guys collect tools and I have a question about a wrench I found while cleaning up. It is a proto/plomb 1234 (1 1/16"). Can anyone tell me how old this is? Is there any value to it? I don't know why but I like it. Hell, it may just be the start of something.

That style wrench dates to '49-'50. That was when Plomb lost a lawsuit to Plumb and had to change their name. It has some value to a collector. It is also a very good user wrench.

Go to http://home.comcast.net/~alloy-artifacts/index.html and you can search the history of the brand.

thanks for the link. I really find this interesting. It was my grandfathers so I'm not going to sell it.

Value is hard to determine. Maybe some of the members who having been watching ebay closer then I will have a better idea but I would guess anywhere from $6-$20 depending on how many bidders fight over it.

It could go higher if you have a bidding war.

The wrench that followed this one only had "Proto" on it but otherwise the same design. You have to give those away because fees would eat up any profit.

Regional value would vary but where I am you would be lucky to get $4 or 5 for it.

Cool wrench to keep for a reminder of your grandfather. That's how I started collecting a little Plomb a few years ago, trying to finish some sets my grandfather had.
