thanks for posting the pics!!

ALL: I posted these new old stock Proto leather wrench wraps over in the Proto thread, but i'm more likely to fill them with Plvmb wrenches. anybody have a favorite leather conditioner?

Well look at that!

Sent from my iPhone using The Garage Journal mobile app
P&c did make a funky extension like that
I am betting the set is all P&C minus whatever broke and was replace by Plomb stuff when Plomb bought them out

Olson: thanks for checking on the 1 inch to 3/4 adapter and happy to hear that Plvmb made them even if it was only for one year.

I think i have some off brand ones, but obviously it would be nice to have all Plvmb in my big socket set.

ALL: TYM mentions that he likes PECARD leather conditioner and I hadn't heard of it. anybody else use it or know of it or do you have another leather conditioner for old leather wrench wraps?

I've used it for years on old and new leather with good results. I've read about some using straight glycerin, too.

Tym: thanks again and since you posted twice about it I had to look up the product and even watched the youtube video where CEO showing the factory in Green Bay, WI where it's made.

which product would you use for flat leather wraps like mine and do you use on your belts and other leather products?

All: sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but I'd bet all of us have some sort of old leather product we'd like to save or keep in great shape.

here's the web site to save you all a bit of time googling: https://pecard.com/

plus once I fill up these with Proto or Plvmb goodness I bet they'll look even better.

cheers

YES! "All in the Family"!

All will be revealed sooner rather than later, since the set is now in the hands of a GJ member and Plomb collector in the general vicinity - which rules me out! :bounce::bubbrubb::eek:wned2:

HAHAHA. I was trying to set Uniau up, and didn't realize he already posted a teaser as I was doing that, so I edited that part.

Let's gooooooo! Post the close-ups!!!

EDIT: Btw, just for the record - that was acquired in LESS THAN 24 HOURS!

Yes we need a full debrief on the set. My bet the only Plomb is the ratchet. The rest must be P&C. Any takers?[emoji1]

I think our posts must have crossed paths I. The ether, Lugz.

I never was any good at keeping a secret.

However, I don’t want to spoil the fun. If anyone else cares to hazard a guess, please do. I have all the part numbers and sizes cleaned off, but that paint is gonna need some work.

The P&C box is Olive Drab under the terrible repaint.

Oh, wow, even better. And even more plausible for wartime production for Plomb to fill the orders any way they could, even with mixed sets, although the rat could've been added later by a PO. Were P&C 1-inch drive sockets cross-drilled like Plomb 1-inch drive sockets for turning with the bar of the sliding tee bar?

EDIT: How far was your round trip? Not that it matters. You must've been buzzing the entire time just thinking about it!

With rush hour traffic, it look me about 50 minutes round trip. Just across the river from me.

I don’t think that set came with a ratchet originally. I’m about to go look at some catalogs.

EDIT: no cross drilled holes. The sockets remind me of the plomb WF sockets with the rounded bottom edge and straight walls.

Very nice. Glad to see that someone here got it. Are we going to have to start to section off territories?[emoji1]

I've exclusively used the Classic Leather Care on old and new leather (it does temporarily darken the leather a bit). I haven't tried the Antique Leather Care. Either should do the trick and not drastically change the character of the leather like Neatsfoot oil.

Ok, who bought this? It is not available any more.

I believe that it was purchased by a noted P&C collector in Ohio. See post 7493.

:headscrat, I don't know about 'noted collector', but I pick up the good stuff when I can (with a little help from my friends).

I've got what will fit of the set soaking in a 5 gallon bucket of evaporust right now. I'll clean them off and post some images this evening.

So, in the '48 P&C catalog, the almost exact match for that set shows up. Pebble ratchet and all. You can't read the pebble, but it is clearly one.

Agree. However, the number of pieces is different.
The set I bought has 6 sockets (all 12pt), 2 extensions, a sliding T (not able to be separated like the one in the catalog image), and of course, the ratchet - Unplated and marked 'Made In The USA'.

Here's the image from the '48 catalog:

USER: the excitement over a little ONE INCH PLVMB RATCHET SET is growing!!!:bowdown: or are the sockets P&C?

nice that Kentucky was so close and while the guys were talking about an active Craigslist listing you probably were already working out the details.

great find!!

Tym: thanks for the heads up on the Pecard leather treatment.

ALL: some of you might have noticed that I started a thread on LEATHER and some of the best ways to treat, preserve and restore it and here's the link:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=436335

sorry for the short HIJACK of PLVMB/PROTO/PC/PENNENS thread while I asked how to keep my Proto leather wraps in good shape. reason being I stuck them in a drawer in our unheated garage maybe 3 or 4 years ago and they were fairly soft and even though it might be a bit colder this time of year the leather had definitely firmed up and was a bit stiff.

hope you all have a good day and maybe i'll find a 1 inch socket set in the PNW today while i'm taking my 87 year old parents to the eye doctor.

cheers

Can't wait to see the pictures of the set cleaned up.

So.... I was wondering if I helped or hurt by posting the Marketplace ad? I wouldn't have posted an eBay auction in case a member was already bidding.

But figured a Marketplace listing that wasn't brand new might have been overlooked. It certainly stirred more interest that I imagined it would!

Are the sliding T and the sockets marked P&C?

That 1948 P&C catalog excerpt is curious. The reason most 3/4- and 1-inch drive T-handles that come apart can come apart is so the bar can be used to turn sockets that are cross-drilled with a hole for the bar. The Sliding T in the P&C set comes apart, but the sockets are not cross-drilled. This needs more thought.

It certainly stirred more interest that I imagined it would!
No piece or set too big or too small, no location too far for this group!

Damon: it's sort of a pet peeve that members would ask about or start talking a lot about active CL or Ebay listings before it was sold. and what really would get me is the person asking about it to see if it was a good buy complaining that another member might have bought it because he posted an ad link online.

anyway I forgot it was a marketplace on FB, but the same probably could apply. I don't belong to Facebook or Instagram or other media and GJ is my only site I chat on hence me having more than a few posts.

some of the guys might benefit from an ad being listed, but for the most part if you see something cool maybe PM a few of the local guys to that ad if you aren't planning on buying it. in this case it looks like the right guy bought it, but not sure if he saw your ad or if he found it on his own.

AND yes i'm excited to see if those are 1 inch Plvmb sockets and if that ratchet is actually a working 1 inch big bertha too.

cheers

I'd say you helped. I had been traveling for work all day and got home at about midnight. With all the family asleep, what's a guy to do but browse The GJ of course! I immediately messaged the seller and he messaged me back the next morning. So, Thanks!

Everything is P&C except for the ratchet!

That 1948 P&C catalog excerpt is curious. The Sliding T in the P&C set comes apart, but the sockets are not cross-drilled. This needs more thought.
I'm thinking that this 'set' must have been immediate post Plomb acquisition. The sliding T and sockets were either stock items or still being made the pre-acquisition way. :dunno:

The ratchet, unplated and still marked 'Made In The USA', makes me think about 1945 early 46. When exactly did they change to 'MFD USA' on everything?

The sliding T bar is bent pretty badly. I'll snap a pic as is, but then it's going to work with a buddy for a trip through his press to straighten it back out.

Edit: The extensions in my set are not milled to accept the cross bar either.

AND yes i'm excited to see if those are 1 inch Plvmb sockets and if that ratchet is actually a working 1 inch big bertha too.
Sockets are all P&C. The Big Bertha has the original drive plug and works like a dream. Now I just need to get all that paint off of everything!

Glad to hear it! I was worried you already knew about it and I could have cost you a higher price if others also contacted the seller.

I was at the work propulsion shop where I noticed a box of old machine wrenches. I saw a plomb and started digging around. I found these and snapped a few pictures for you guys. Some modified ones as well. I like the war finish marking!

81 Turbo: thanks for taking the time to spread them out and take a few pics!!

ALL: so when i find half wrenches i'm guessing prior owners cut the regular wrench in half for one reason or another?

i've got a few modified Plvmb tools and i even found one chisel a few years ago that was cut and used as a shim under a welder's 3/4 inch plate welding bench. i know it was sad and so much so that I didn't keep the chisel.

Some more wall fillers thanks to eBay. Some really nice LAs and another pliers for the board.
This puts the unique count at 752! And total count at 1406!

I'm still cleaning this P&C set up, but here's a handful of pictures. I'll post more over in the P&C thread after a bit.

The box still needs some work. Originally Olive Drab, but the lid has been repainted along with all the tools. I'm still working on getting paint off of the tools.

Here's the set in the box - someone must have used a bar extension on the sliding T to bend it like that:

And the handles:

Group shot of the sockets:

Ratchet guts. Looks like new in there:

More pics to come over on the P&C thread.
