A little on the drag link alot on the rope braid. Collectors go nuts for the plomb rope braid.

I will give you a you ****. I am betting the drag would pull a $50-$100 sale price. The other would maybe do a $20.

I have a 1" 8pt craftsman rope braid I picked up and a craftsman 3/8 universal joint rope braid. I have never seen a plomb rope braid in person before. Nice find

Those rope braid craftsman are plomb made ID guess? I'm gonna keep an eye out for them. Picked up a 6 inch PLVMB pipe wrench a while back. Need to dig through my pile and post if up

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I recently discovered my love and appreciation for Plvmb tools, and old Proto. I discovered it when my friend asked if I had any to trade for a vise. I took them all out, laid them on the bench, and looked at them for a minute or an hour. I just couldn't part with them ;)

I was reading up on Plvmb tonight and discovered how old they are...I had no idea these tools were from the 40's, maybe even older! I'm really digging them :)

One question I have...do any of you actually still use them?

Oh, and one more...did they ever make metric wrenches?

Thanks

Hello from the other side of the mountains!

I absolutely love plomb, they make great tools, but even more so, I love their designs. Do I use my plomb tools? All the time! Though I must admit, if whatever I'm doing is putting some pretty descent strain on any of the tools, I'll choose something I wont cry as much over if it breaks, though I don't foresee ever breaking my new 1" ratchet :lol_hitti Enjoy your collection and post a bunch of pics!

I had a few at work that I am bringing home, so I thought I would get them all together before posting pics.

Did Plvmb ever make metric wrenches? Or was America strictly Imperial back then? Go easy on me guys...born in the 70's here ;)

I've never seen any Plomb metric, but of course Proto did/does. Doesn't mean Plomb didn't make any, I've just never run across one.

On that note, if Plvmb never made metric, can anyone tell me when Proto first came out with them?

I have a few Plomb items; I only recently really started to use and accumulate them. I just spent some time on a tool board and racks/hangers to store some general use tools. Here are my Plomb combination and box end wrenches (sorry; the sockets are old Cornwell . . .) and screwdrivers (mostly Plomb with a couple of Proto). I also have a few other pieces; a couple of pebble wrenches and some smooth open end wrenches.

Those tool racks are really neat! And great wrenches my friend :)

I'm looking forward to the pics! As for plomb ever making metric - yes they did, though very little. I'm not fully sure of what, in total, they made in metric, but I do know they made metric-size open end wrenches. 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 21 and 24mm wrenches. This info comes straight from the pages of a Plomb Tool Company catalog I have a few pages of, dated August 30, 1948.

As for being born in the '70's, hey I was born in the middle of the 80's, so fear not lol.

Filson: do you happen to have those catalog pages saved so you can post them up because i'd like to see them.

ALL: just curious if the 32nd sizing covers metric because as of yet I haven't tried one on a metric nut? i'll be the first to try if anybody doesn't already know, but thinking that they might work and I've got a few complete sets of old sockets with the 32nds included.

No I don't, but it'd be something I'd be happy to do later this evening when I get home from class.

Found this today I didn't look it over good enough it's missing the selector detent I'm assuming it's nothing more than a ball bearing with a spring And I think the wrench is plomb as well because of the name grind

They had to grind the plomb nme off some of the wrenches during the lawsuit. I have only ever found 1. But that ratchet ID hard to come by. I think I better make a trip out your way to plomb Graceland.

I rescued these a few months ago, although I haven't had time to properly clean them up. I did replace missing/broken parts and got the ratchets working as smooth as butter. Some of these were literally on the ground and covered in silt from floods. Seems as if a good amount of large drive PLVMB tools made there way to WA, and even though the ones I have show signs of serious work/abuse over the last 70ish years, they still function well!

Here are my Plvmb and Proto/Challenger tools. I like them so much I have decided to acquire complete sets and have them as my main SAE wrenches.

68 Couple - NICE MAN! Definitely a lot of big plomb in WA!

Drives and everyone - 12:30am and I'm just now settling down from the day. I just wanted to drop a line to let you all know I haven't forgot the plomb catalog, but I'm gonna crash for the night lol. The day stretched out longer than I expected :p

Thanks! That find of yours is awesome! I wonder if there is more of the big stuff here just because of certain industries in the area? I think a couple of my large pieces were Navy surplus at some point, probably used at Bremerton in the shipyards. Maybe some were used in logging?

Quite likely, though even before I-5 was around, there was a lot of traffic between Cali and Seattle area, so that may explain more "regional" sales as well, to the L.A. based company.

Speaking of the Bremerton shipyards, my Reed 933 (weird number, I know, it's a 5" stationary) came from there. It's heavily wore out, but still functional. I'd never part with it for the local history it's tied to. Judging by the condition of the set I have, I don't believe it's seen much, if any use. Sort of neat having something in great shape, sort of a bummer at the same time though, that it doesn't have any 'grease & grime' in it's history.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Cornfused I am cause a wf-8 should be a 9/32 drive as far as I know. That being said 9/32 is larger than a 1/4 by 1 /32 as I calculate ( could be wrong cause I got my learnin in Alabama) so why dose it measure out to 1/4 and fit 1/4 drive sockets? Why dose it not have a detent

Some the wf series were 1/4 drive usually stamped with an s on the so it should be wf-8-s. Or somebody could have swapped the guts or the plate

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Ok Filson, now you have me confused with that catalog page. I was basing my assumtion of having a couple tools from Bremerton based solely on the fact of location, and that a couple look to have a stamping "USN" or "USNS(?)". I was thinking that was for U.S. Navy or U.S. Naval Shipyard. Also where I picked it up had bought a lot of military surplus tooling over the years.

Now I see that catalog lists the striking wrenches with part numbers "USN"? I don't think I have or have seen any Plomb/Proto tools with anything different than the standard numerical part number. I still think mine are Navy surplus (they do have the 4 digit number as well as the USN** stamp), but seeing that listing makes me wonder.

Does that catalog list the 1" ratchet? If so, is it the standard part #?

Anyone have some thoughts on this?
