Patty Paint sure made a splash with that entrance! NICE ToolMobile!

Anyone know a movie reference for a French 75 (cocktail, not howitzer)? Without googling... I found that an apt name for the cocktail, always made with cognac in my experience; this is the first place I've seen a gin alternative. Cognac fits with the "French" motif, but gin fits with...wartime shortages of everything except ammo and the enemy. Any more than two French 75s and it was going to be "one of those nights." Ooof, I don't miss that!

I never heard of cognac in a French 75 until seeing it here, so I googled. First 7 or 8 places that popped up (Liquor.com, Bon Appetit, Epicurious, etc) all say gin. Wikipedia says gin. Way down the page I finally ran into a recipe with cognac, but saying it was not traditional, and then a second site that called it a French 125. I'm trying to think of the most authoritative way to resolve this. How about we call three world famous bars and ask the head bartender? :)

There's a pretty good history at diffordsguide.com. They even go into how Arnaud's French 75 Bar in New Orleans (which uses Cognac) should probably call theirs a French 125. It's clearly been made with either for quite awhile but the writer's extensive history ID's Gin as being in the first written recipes.

Some random singles and an interesting owner’s mark on the 1 1/4 Pebble combo...

Added ‘cause I like the way the picture turned out!

Best regards,
John

Thanks, X. I'm going to chalk that one up for dear old dad. A run of alcohol jokes just broke out on the Garage Sale thread, too. I think it's Covid Spring fever.

Hi Lugz. One more for what it's worth, my girl grabbed this from our bar while I was asking her what she thought.

I got two plomb pieces in the mail today. One is a 4748 ratchet, which I’ve been looking for for a long time. The other is a piece I’ve never seen before: a plomb la 9722 electrical screw driver. The handle shape is something I’ve never seen before.

Thanks. I just made one with a bottle of exquisite gin that DD#1 got me for Xmas. The Botanist Islay Dry Gin 22.

Congrats, Dan. I'll drink to that! :)

Dang! Nice scores. Sad the drive plug is missing. I was gonna make some but haven't had much spare time to devote to it.

Nice ratchet. I’ve never even seen one. Was that the only 1/4” drive ratchet offered in 1940?

Plomb/Proto tool board question - Do we know the total amount of "panels" offered by plomb/proto ? I have these photos in proto mailers showing 21 "panels" or boards mounted on a wall and also this picture of the "Proto Merchandiser". While you cant see every side of the display, if we apply the logic of 4 boards/panels per side, this would be 32 panels in all... I have a 1/2 size panel that is numbered 106-B but i dont think there is over 100 panels, I think proto was including all their advertising panels, not just display boards. Anyone know this answer ?

**also, I was winning this 1/2 drive board until the last minute yesterday on the bay...which one of you jerks sniped me? Now I need to find another 1/2 drive board to buy

My first Proto Plomb socket, I think it has dual markings. Proto Plomb tool co and manufactured in USA. The o’s are the triangles. Is this normal?

Yes. The dual marked (lawsuit) tools were only made in 1949. In 1950 no mention of Plomb was allowed and the Proto markings had gone from PR∇T∇ to PROTO.

A rare sighting in my neck of the woods. It has been loved on a little too much for me.

Swinging by the local scrap yard today, I found some oldies-but-goodies from the Plomb world:

A Plomb rope braid socket from 1930, DBE from the same time frame, and a USN marked impact socket:

(ignore the Craftsman socket)

Here is a listing for the 7/8” 6 point deep socket in the 1944 NAF catalog. For some reason 7/8” was a popular aircraft spark plug size.

The 7/8" hex on aviation spark plugs evolved as the plugs became smaller. At first, spark plugs were pretty bulky, mostly due to being designed for disassembly and service. As aircraft engines developed, there was pressure to make the spark plugs smaller in order to provide more cooling airflow and less interference with baffles, wiring, etc. 7/8" hex was about as small as an 18MM spark plug body could be and still be disassembled. Around WWII electrode design evolved that provided enough access to service the plugs without removing the center electrode, and permanently-assembled plugs started to appear. Soon, they were the only design available, but the 7/8" hex had become so dominant that no effort was made to reduce the size of the hex.

Smokeshow sent me one of his Plomb tool board stickers and it motivated me to get going on a project that I had been planning. I had some leftover redwood pieces from a home repair and a retired carpenter buddy made this display shelf for my Plomb sets. Now I have to figure out a place for it.
