went over to a guys house advertising an edger. found out he was going to have a g-sale. checked out some of his tools and got some plomb. the breaker bar might be something unique? everything is marked. the power trim, although nice was over priced. anybody know anything on the blackhawk sockets upper right corner?

Did you purchase all these? The ratchet and breaker bar are sweet!

i did, after hearing what he wanted for his lawn stuff i was kinda worried, but when he said 20.00 for my little pile, i thought that was fair. also got a little hacksaw and i just figured out what this little football key chain does, it's a lighter!

The Blackhawk sockets are from the 40's ...there is a vintage Blackhawk thread on here in case you are interested! They made some really cool and innovative stuff, I just like plomb better for most vintage tools [emoji38]

Anyone got a Plomb box that came in black? I sanded a few spots through the layers of this one, and its black at the bottom, inside and out. The twice baked enamel is harder than the metal under it. You can see the microwrinkle finish under the silver can bomb.

I suppose its possible the pigment was turned black by the heat or somebody stripped it inside and out for a repaint.

The hinge pins pulled out without too much fight, so I got out the old WF-83 hammer and some wood blocks to beat down the worse lumps. Hood closes a lot better now, but I need to figure out how to do some shrinking here and there.

I like a lot of the Plomb stuff, but to me, their only sockets I've seen that hold a candle to those Blackhawks are the 3/4 4 rings.

The top box in these pictures is black inside and out. It is for a 1" set.

No worries, most plomb guys also like Blackhawk as well so not to much complaining here [emoji5] you are correct the breaker has that hole so you could pass that rod through to make it into a t handle! Does yours have a spot in the end to place a ratchet into it to turn it into an extension?

Ladies and gentleman...without further ado, i present to you my new top box#9998... This was one of my unicorns next to a tool mobile so one down, one to go! It needs some drawers straightened and is missing 2 slides so if anyone has any ideas or ones laying around please let me know! If I can't find any I may have to fabricate them! I promised the prior owner I would not restore it and that is what I am going to do! My plans are to degrease it, straighten the drawers and slides and then line it with cork old school style. It is from the northwest but it has no rust and is not missing the cover like the one that was just on eBay! It even has the key[emoji3]

Be still my beating heart! I found a rust covered ratchet at the local Habitat for Humanity store today. I couldnt tell what it was due to heavy corrosion, so I soaked it for a few hours, then scrubbed away the rust . . . Holy ****!

It cleaned up nicely and works smooth as silk. 24 clicks per revolution. Proba ly a late 1920's model.

ALL: Smoke is one hell of a card player i'm guessing cause he had very little emotion when i showed him my (was mine) old Plvmb box. i really didn't mind keeping it and just wanted to meet him and show him what he was looking for. we talked for a while and i thought i was heading back home with it and dang it if he didn't accept my offer and have a spot ready to haul it away.

he certainly can change the color if he wants to, but it does have a fair amount of original paint and i think he likes the wrinkle look almost or maybe more than I do.

he's got some work to do, but i bet it will look a lot better in his hands than it ever would have in mine.

THANKS SMOKESHOW!!

ALL: it seems like i'm always asking for tools when i go to somebody's shop or house to buy a vise or anything and look what popped up today. it wasn't a killer deal and i already have a couple, but i think this 3/4 inch ratchet might clean up nicely or maybe better than a rusted one i own cause i'm trying to make a working set and collectible set of these old quality USA made tools.

BTW i'm looking for a nice big PLVMB top box now!!

cheers

RAG: one of mine might fit in a flat rate box so save your doubles and triples cause PLVMB works better than cash. at the rate you find stuff though i bet you'll find a 3/4 and maybe a 1 inch ratchet soon if you want one.

Well I am a pretty good actor and am great at surprises and secrets[emoji846] one I saw the old girl I had to have it! I do like the been there done that look this box has so it will be staying original finish! I will just clean it and give it a esteemed place in my garage ! I have a few other projects ahead of this one but will get to it! Heck it has only taken 60 years or so to get to me so a few months more wont make a difference[emoji5] now if I could just find a tool mobile to set this on...

msgtsmithret - I have a 1929 1/2" bar, and it just says DSB(Drive Sliding Bar), the numbers might have come later? super sweet Ratchet and not missing the drive plug, score!

Drives - super close cousin to the one I posted last page, but there is quite a bit of variation '46/7 '48/9.

blast those silver spray bomb guys, you should need a license to buy that stuff.

Smoke: will it fit on your PRESSTEEL toolbox and if so how about a couple pics of that combo?

you are a COOL CAT and you'd be great to go to AUCTIONS with. (or big dollar card games) :D

OLE: thanks for the good words and i'm not good with the dates of mine or any PLVMB yet, but i do own a few. not as many as you, but give me some time cause i don't have an expensive HOT ROD eating up my tool funds. so which year was my 3/4 inch ratchet made?

I don't have that many, I just talk about them too much.
conventional wisdome and Twertsys site say 46 and early 47 are MADE IN ... USA
and the later ones are MFD ... USA

My head is more tear droppey, and the pebbles are much less pronounced.

I suppose it is possible that some of the variation is actually which facility it came out of, but I doubt they were selling enough 3/4 to make them everywhere.

I will get some once I fix the box so could be a bit! I would love to go to auctions but would end up spending all my money [emoji851] so it is best I don't [emoji1]

I came across this CL ad for anyone in the PNW who might be interested. It's a smaller Plomb tool chest with what appears to be a newer (and likely foreign-made) 3/4" drive ratchet and socket set. Still, the box looks mint. It's out of my price range at $225, but maybe the socket set could be resold to offset the cost?

Thanks for sharing wish I live in plomb heaven up in the PNW. Box is a little spendy thought looks like the one socket is IH so it may be worth it if there is more.

dang ok! lol what I did was this.. I have been looking around for Smoke a 9888 box for a few weeks in my spare time. I got on CL and searched for PLOMB. then started picking all the major cities around me... ended up in a town way up north some where and found a listing with this box and contents. emailed as it was a month old listing and asked about it. the lady still had it and more then happy to mail it after she received payment. Sent her a bday card with $24 and added $5 in Texas lotto scratch offs to sweeten the deal. took about 2 weeks to get it but... it was great price and deal! she only said there were a few sockets and ratchet but it was full of goodies. It had another ratchet with it that was a junky oxwall.. and a couple oxwall sockets mixed in. Over all very happy with the deal.
