Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Where did you find this estate sale? Did you find it online or happen to drive by and just see it?

Saw the estate sale on CL and they had a photo of the garage area and that's what made me go to this particular sale.

I am a little sick I know:willy_nil but most every Friday night I make a list of promising estate sales. I do a rough plot on a map (I am in the SoCal area) and try to combine a bunch of sales in one area and then try and go to 4-5 sales first thing in the morning. If you go to estate sales, you know it is pretty hit and miss, and you really don't know what you're going to find. Even if there are clear pictures of something you think you want, you'll get there real early and there will already be a line of a half a dozen guys who have seen the pic also.

That body hammer is great. Was looking through my stuff again last night and I have more Plomb than I realize. Will try to post more pix later. And I'll snap some images of my Blackhawk stuff for that other thread too.

I do the exact same thing every weekend. I pick out the sales and get a general area that i'm going to be in but i travel all over the place if they are spaced out over a large area. I'm used to a very early work schedule so i'm usually one of the first few guys in line.

I've gotten pretty good at decoding CL ads and estate companys pictures to figure out what is going to be a good sale and i don't always buy tools. Today i bought 1 Proto pebble finish wrench along with a gold nugget inside of a velvet lined ring box, it was overlooked in a box of junk but i found it, and 4 etchings that should sell for at least 200.00 each. My girlfriend thinks i'm crazy but what ends up in the garage is my business

Nice roll up bag. Great score. (thanks for the PM by the way)

Coincidentally, I just discovered the bags that I have are indeed Plomb. I'll post up some pix later once I get them transferred from my camera.

The more of these tools passed down through my family that I look at, the more Plomb and Proto I discover. :D

Plomb tools bags ... #2401 and #2402. Filled with various Plomb & Proto chisels and punches.
Funny thing, I have been using these for years and never thought to look who made them until recently.

Feeler gauges. Both #000D. Proto on the top, Plomb on the bottom with round 'O' which would seem to indicate pre-1934 manufacture.

This is a wall hanger in the garage. I thought it was a cool tool, I'd just never seen on like it. It's stamped "1AM(1 1/2) PLOMB 2624" and appears to be copper(?). Anyone know anything about it? I've also got some random 3/4" drive sockets and an adjustable wrench at work.

Let's see them.

That box end wrench is pretty interesting. Looks copper colored. You think it's solid copper
or copper plated?

I'm not sure. It feels about the same in weight as my 1 1/2 combo wrench, but that just me holding them. I'm thinking it's for non-sparking conditions, but most of the older tools I've seen for that are bronze looking, not copper. Maybe someone will know from the part number.

My son and I picked up a couple of Plomb items this weekend. These are the first and only Plomb tools that I've come across. I must say, I really like the action of the ratchet.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I might of already posted a picture of the wrench in a different thread but it was my only find a few weeks ago.

The puller set was another item i found a few weeks ago but didn't have a use for it so i ended up selling it. Besides, it was too nice to use and i rarely pull off pulleys/gears at the office. The sticker is a bit worn but its in the original box tool.

Yes...fantastic stuff. Especially neat to see original sets all together and things that have served three generations in one family!
I got started many years ago with random bits of Plomb that just came along with other tools...just junk in the bottoms of boxes. Then I discovered that the rusty old Plomb ratchet down there with the bent screwdrivers and K-mart sockets was the smoothest ratchet I had ever held...

Just got these in my latest E-bay mixed tool purchase. Are the extensions drilled at the top for use with a slide bar, or was that an owner mod?

I've already told the story somewhere on GJ how I found this box of Plomb at a local garage sale. A sweet little old lady had just lost her husband and she was selling his tools to pay for his failed surgery. She was all broken up so I knew she was vulnerable. She wanted $30 for the whole box but I worked her over until I got it for $15. As I was leaving her garage sale I accidentally ran over her little poodle but did not stop as I was afraid she'd regret selling the tools.

Relax, the story above is completely bogus, but I like to pretend it's true. It took me years to assemble this collection. No little old ladies or poodles were harmed, but my pocket book sure was.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Some very nice stuff in this thread.

Plomb and Proto are my favorite brands. Most of my work tools--ratchets, sockets and pullers particularly--have been Proto for over 40 years. My dad had a mix of Plomb and Proto, and I have only a few of his Plombs. My older brother and a cousin got most of dad's Plombs, so I've kind of been collecting replacements for a while, just to feel like I've got more of his tools than I actually do.

Here's some of them. Only one Proto in the bunch, and a couple of dual-marked Plomb-Protos. All the rest strictly Plomb:

b2d30ac1.jpg
938637e5.jpg
ac01cc57.jpg
ff45d5bd.jpg

Missing the 1/4" combo to make a set from 1/4" to 1" and the 5/16" isn't a pebble. Based on what I've seen in old catalogs, $2.49 would have been the price of the leatherette tool roll around the mid-1940s.

50c4dad8.jpg

The DR8 ratchet above is probably my oldest Plomb tool, circa late-1920s. Behind it is a 5451 from 1937.

a67605cc.jpg
da0fade5.jpg
696c9bc2.jpg
f7ef56a3.jpg

The 1/2" ratchet, 2 breaker bars, and t-handle above were dad's Plombs that I ended up with, and the slide hammer below. Also the 3/4" ratchet, which is the only Proto I'll post. The one at the top is a Plomb Big Bertha 1" ratchet:

e4f72204.jpg

20315f7f.jpg
2a3f2ed6.jpg
3ea8fdfb.jpg
99179f5e.jpg
2c062eda.jpg

There's more--mostly open-end and box wrenches, and some duplicates of combos and sockets. And there's a few Wright Field contract tools, but mostly I look for non-contract stuff a civilian would have had at the time.

The idea was to put together a reasonably complete Plomb tool set to use when I work on something vintage, like our Ford 8N or maybe even a WWII jeep. :) As you can see, I'm more than a little weak on pliers and screwdrivers, among a few other things. I could easily fill in the missing things with Proto, but that's not the way I wanted to do it. So the search goes on....

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I looked around for another place to post this, but there isn't much in the way of vintage Proto threads, and since GRX said it was ok to post Proto here too, here goes....

This is a Proto product you probably won't see very often:

ebdb13b2.jpg

Late 1950s, early 1960s vintage tach-dwell meter. Yes it works, and yes I use it. I mostly work on vehicles even older than the meter, so it's perfect, and it has outlasted the fancy Sun and Snap-On meters I've had along the way. Got it used around 1970, and for free, because it wasn't working. When I called Proto back then, it took them a while to find it in their archives. Proto referred me to whoever manufactured it for them, but now I can't remember who that was. The manufacturer didn't have parts anymore, but I was able to figure out what was wrong with it and get it working, and 40+ years later, it still works, and looks kind of cool besides. :)

Did Plomb make a 1/4" combo wrench? I've seen Proto ones, but never a Plomb and they're not in any catalog I've seen. That doesn't mean a whole lot, though.

I've got a DR8 ratchet and a DD9-1/2 socket (19/32) to go with it, but alas no drive plug. I wonder what the likelihood is of ever finding one orphaned.

How does the 5451 ratchet differ from the 5449?

930Dreamer,

If you end up missing a Plomb box as nice as the one Bolster has, I'm going to have to drive all the way out to Texas and have a talk with you:bounce:

Hopefully it will be sitting right were you left it and it will be yours for 30.00 bucks. Good luck!!
