Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

While trying to build out a set of sockets and smooth combination wrenches for one of my grandkids, I came across this tool box and had to have it even though I don't have much to fill it. It's in fairly decent shape though a little latch has been added so the front flap won't flop.

Yesterday, I picked up a little kit of 1/4" drive stuff including the tee bar and extension. It included sockets without maker ID marks, only the knurling and sizes upside down. Anybody recognize the maker by the style? The image shows 6, 8 and 12 point versions.

Those sockets look alot like ones that a few of us are trying to id also.

Here is a photo of mine that I got last week.

I have a bunch of those sockets as well. I always thought they were Duro:dunno:

That's a WF 6. Fairly rare, but not unseen. Nice find.

The WF sheet lists the -6 as a 9/32 extension/nut driver. Because there is no number on the piece I'm curious how you associated the two. But it does make sense.

This is an old plomb socket, likely from the postwar era I think. I haven't figured out a date but the code is BB. I'd love to have an entire set of these, good project to work on! I have one to start with! :p

"fairly decent shape"??

Well now THAT'S a bit of an understatement!

Great find!

I bought this today at a garage sale. A pretty big socket. In pretty nice shape.

I have not been able to find a wrench with the big V in the middle of it online. I'm thinking someone machined this V on this wrench. I'm hoping someone could tell me if this wrench came from the factory like this.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Little question for everyone. Has anyone EVER seen/heard of a 1/4" or 3/8" drive transition/lawsuit ratchet (Prvtv & Plvmb marking)?

I'm trying to acquire a full set of ratchets and have found the 1/2" and 3/4" drive ratchets but can't find those 2, not even a mention in google searches anywhere.

Is this an exercise in futility? Am I searching for something that doesn't exist?

Twertsy: i'm pretty sure i own both a 1/4 and 3/8 Plvmb ratchet, but they are buried behind an actual couple tons of steel that i just picked up so might be next week before i can post pictures of what they look like today. here's a blurry picture of my 1/4 inch Plvmb ratchet and i found this picture of several ratchets that i don't own all of (yet).

Drive, I have a ton of Plomb ratchets. I have a ton of Proto ratchets. What I don't have is a Transition/Lawsuit ratchet in 1/4" or 3/8" drive. That's what I'm hunting.

Twertsy: i thought you were looking to see if Plvmb made the 1/4 or 3/8 inch ratchets. the lawsuit ratchets and correct me if i'm wrong are Plvmb ratchets with the name ground off. i seriously might own 100 ratchets so i'll have to see if i have any that you are looking for so i can take a picture and if i have a couple or more maybe send one your way.

cheers

I know the feeling......I just crested the 200 mark......and climbing. I'm looking for a dual Prvtv / Plvmb (Prvtv "by Plvmb Tool Co.") marked of each, not grind-off.

Y'know, Twertsy.... Now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever seen a Transitional 1/4" or 3/8" ratchet either....

Zeet, I have searched the internet, high and low, and cannot even find mention of one. None on ebay sold listings, none on any forums, nada. If someone comes up with one, I'll offer a pretty penny.

I have never seen one in my travels either. I think the only ones I have seen have been the 1/2 or 3/4 if I recall correctly.

I just bought this one, cleaned it up, lots of crusty grease in the mechanism. It is a little worn, but works great. Pretty excited to add a Plvmb to the collection!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

These are what started my vintage tool obsession, set of pre law suit punches. I went to an estate sale and bought a bunch of vintage tools including these Plomb for $20. And when I was leaving, I found a $20 bill sitting on the floor! :)

I didn't know anything about Plomb then. After doing some research I found the connection with Proto and I was hooked!!.
Until then, my tool boxes (2 chests & 1 cart) had only modern tools, mostly US Craftsman except for a couple of vintage K-D brake tools that came in my Craftsman bottom I bought used 18-19 years ago. Since then I've been buying vintage tools almost exclusively and I've replaced some modern tools with vintage ones.
At least now I know I'm not the only one, thanks to GJ
.

That is a great collection of Plomb chisels and punches. I've been looking for a 76-5/8 diamond point chisel but haven't been able to find one. I did run across this carbon scraper lately.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I was looking through some old tools yesterday and realized that among my two war finish wrenches I have a transition era wrench as well! (The one all the way to the right). Pretty cool. I think I am going to try and fill out this roll up with correct Plvmb wrenches, war finish if I can find them. I have to find new homes for the newer proto and craftsman wrenches filling it out now. :D

Hey Duro, I could use that transition if you want to trade some WF for it.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

You guys probably already know this....I took that Plvmb 3/8" ratchet to the local Proto dealer to see if they had any parts to rebuild it. They looked at the part number cast into the handle and pulled a rebuild kit off the shelf...same parts and same part number as the best Proto ratchet made today! He offered to give it to me for free if I gave him the old internals as warrantee repair! I told him I'd rather just buy the rebuilt kit for $14 and keep the worn original internals.

Ratchet now - http://www.toolup.com/Proto-J5249-3-8-Drive-Standard-Length-Classic-Pear-Head-Ratchet

So cool. Proto/Plvmb is the best.

IIRC they where made under a contract for the Fairchild air craft company. They are pretty rare. I have 1 wrench marked ranger. If you look it up in either alloy artifacts or use a google search it routs you here to a reference about plvmb ranger tools??? Sorry I can't remember more but regardless they are really rare tools :rocker:

See the section labeled "Contract Stampings" near the bottom of this page:

http://www.vannattabros.com/plomb/plombtool.html

It indicates your wrench was made for Ranger Aircraft Engine Division of Fairchild.

I have one or two marked Ranger, and several marked PWA.

I found this last weekend at a car swap meet for $1 and also got some sockets (proto, snap on and craftsman) and a Proto 5/8 combo wrench for $5.
