This tappet wrench came with a set of tools I purchased at a garage sale. Only my second Plomb Los Angeles ...

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

ALL: so I was doing a little (or a lot) of ORGANIZING today and even though some of the wrenches are in pretty rough shape decided to take a few pictures for the thread. some I've posted before and I found more after shooting the pictures, but here's a start. I have more in storage and hopefully will find them before too long.

I forgot how nice my 1/2 inch socket set was that has all the 32nd sizing and a nice metal box. I know I have a 3/4 ratchet set and a 1 inch ratchet in my cabinet with a few vises and another tool box with some so maybe I can put together a full set or close to it some day.

cheers and ask questions if you have any and feel free to post your favorite way to spiff these old gems up too if you have a great method.

Picked this up last week hiding in an old Williams 1/4" electrical set. Was the 4751 part of a Plomb set?

NotLob: cool find. I think I have a couple of the 1/4 inch Plvmb ratchets, but not sure if I have a full set of sockets. are all the sockets in the box Plvmb or maybe Williams? I also like that handle that looks like it might be for a 3/8 or 1/2 inch socket. what brand is that?

That's a Williams handle and they appear to also be Williams sockets.

Notlob, that set could make a guy  in two directions, towards the east coast and west coast

Your ratchet looks very much like a mystery ratchet I purchased.

Drives-nice collection

Mr. Olson- awesome save and stellar job on the sockets

Yesterday I ran across these Plomb Los Angeles pliers. They have seen better days. I chalked the logo so you guys can sort of make it out.

Thanks I wish I was in a plomb hit spot but in the Midwest it is scarce. The only advantage is very few people know about plomb.

Olson: nice finds

Twertsy: are you saying you want to own a tool or specifically a PLVMB MUSEUM some day?

3Bay: thanks and there is more if I can find them.

ALL: I bought a few extra drawers this weekend and since they won't hold as much heavy items as the metal ones i'm thinking one cabinet might need to be PLVMB only so the search continues. I might have to go hang around Los Angeles for a few weeks or month.

cheers

Here's a little ratchet I picked up a few weeks ago. Somebody must have modified it because 1/4" sockets fit just fine. I think it was $1 at the pawn shop I frequent.:bounce:

Sure doesn't look modified unless someone replaced the gear with a 1/4". 1/4" drive WF-8s usual have a -S mark.....

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Olson: I know you weren't planning a road trip, but I might be selling at least one and maybe 2 of these old oak blueprint cabinets either "as is". or stick in storage and restore them and maybe turn them into living room furniture with some collectable Plvmb in them. I really didn't know these cabinets existed a month ago and when I asked and looked around some found their way to my house. doesn't always happen like that, but it's nice when a want and need turns into a find. still smiling and sorry you haven't found yours yet. ROAD TRIP??

I think I spied another box or two of PLVMB so I might be posting up a few more soon.

47: even though that 1 inch ratchet isn't a Plvmb or an old L.A. made Proto it sure is nice.

Sams: nice find

User: interesting labeling and can't say I've found any like that

Hobbies: if it won't fit in your tool box i'll double your investment and pay shipping too. good stop that day.

Poorly listed/described on that one auction site...
WF on the left of the breaker bar, pebbles to the right of the ratchet(which works really well)

OLE: i'm guessing you got a good buy if the descriptions and pictures were poor on the auction site? in any case I don't care how much you paid for these if you are happy and just wondering if the breaker bar 90 degree bend is a nice modification or was it by chance made that way at the factory?

nice finds

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Others of that part number are all straight, I'm pretty sure this one is torch bent, and the guy got really close to a perfect 90 on the bend.
Maybe as a crank handle for a machine? I used it to free up some female square drive ratchets that came in the lot and the bend kept my knuckle nice and safe.
My theory is the tools in this batch all came from someone in the aircraft industry between 45 and 55, the Plomb was about 1/3 of it.

I don't know if I got a super deal, but I'm having fun.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Just joined GJ and this is my first post.

Things started innocently enough. My father died a year ago at 93, and I've just started going through some of his tools. He was living in another part of the country, so some sorting was needed at that end. Pick up a socket, and if it was stamped Taiwan, Japan, or China, it went on the yard sale table, if stamped USA, it went into one of many tool boxes that went back home.

So, there I was, innocently sorting sockets (LOTS of sockets) by brand and size, when I found a complete set of Wizard sockets. Wizard? Never heard of them. Look Wizard up on Google and discover Alloy-Artifacts and Garage Journal. So started the trip down the slippery slope of tool collecting and vintage tools. Looked through his large garage that he also had locally and found a complete set of Plomb 12xx series wrenches (at least 3/8" to 3/4") plus other assorted Plomb and Proto wrenches, sockets, ratchets, and other Plomb/Proto marked tools. Plus lots of other vintage tools.

So, here's a few Plomb photos and question of the day. What is this thing? I know what it is, a 3/4", 12 point, offset ratcheting wrench. But, what was it made for? I cant seem to find any photos of anything similar made by Plomb.

As noted, it has a 3/4", 12 point opening, and is 10.5" long. There is a number marked on the back of the handle that was under stamped and hard to read. Using a stereo microscope, I think the number is 91 79022, but the 1 could be something else like a T and the 0 might be an 8. I'm fairly sure about the 9s, the 7, and the 2s.

So what was the intended use of this wrench/ratchet, was it a custom unit or an obscure production item?

Thanks

welcome to the site, T_Curlee.

I know absolutely nothing about PLOMB/Proto.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Curlee: Plvmb had many unique tools they made. i'm wondering if that was made for a specific tool or maybe a certain bolt. I have several of their ratchets that have a plug that goes in from both sides so if you find a plug to fit it maybe that is the answer. the plugs in my ratchets actually insert into a socket.

post up more pictures of your Plvmb stuff when you can. also sorry to hear your Dad passed because he sounds like he was a very handy and maybe a generous man.

also welcome to the slippery slope called Garage Journal.

cheers

4C: I have so many names on tools I've never heard of one day i'm going to start a thread just to have all of them figured out like you just did for Curlee's wizards. I think I have a few wizards so i'll put them in the Industro drawer when I see them. thanks

Welcome to the slippery slope T Curlee.

I don't think Indestro is the only Wizard supplier I have a Western Auto Wizard tiller out back holding a tarp down.

As far as that curly Plomb, Id guess it fits a machine, something like a lathe chuck.
Maybe look at it as triple square rather than double hex.

T Curlee, that is a neat wrench. Never seen that one, I don't believe that was a catalog item. Probably a special order made by Plomb is my guess. Its purpose, who knows?

What's interesting to me is the handle is like a regular wrench beam with the small logo. Must have needed it that way for clearance. So the head is a modified 1/2" drive ratchet?

Agree, special application and purpose built. I doubt you'll find that one in a catalog. Very cool tool!

The 9H**** indicates Caterpillar to me. Perhaps a special wrench for access.

I also think Wizard tools sold in Western Auto stores were made by many manufacturers, I had a 3/8" socket set in a small metal box that looked like Snap On.

The bent wrench may be a spark plug wrench? Any idea what size it is?

Sorry I lost this box 30 years ago. It's really a vague memory. No telling what they really were anymore.

I thought it would be fun too sell this whole package on the GJ so that some member can fill out his/hers missing wrenches or maybe just sell them on Ebay and make some good money.

Hope you enjoy the pictures all in all there are 29 wrenches plus many are marked from wright field.
