Even though I think it's grossly over priced I saw a 1 inch drive pebble plomb ratchet on eBay just putting it out there

MOOR: what is grossly overpriced price of a 1 inch ratchet? I didn't see any on craigs so guessing THE BAY auction site is where it is for sale?

ALL: found this old Proto Los Angeles file sitting on a bench and hadn't posted it yet. not sure what's in the teeth and speaking of cleaning files what are everybody's best methods? or is there a thread on cleaning and maintaining files?

Moor: I paid a benji for mine maybe 3 years ago and mine has a Proto rebuild kit in it. do you already own one? it's ain't no little thing. i'll check it out and see what kind of condition it's in and betting that it probably sells if it's not broken.

MOOR: A one inch Plvmb ratchet? I know they are laying on the ground in your area, but stealing from widows is a crime. just jealous. WELL DONE.

how many do you own? if it's your first one inch ratchet weren't you blown away by the size of it when you first saw it or held it?

Filson: speaking of one inch ratchets are your sockets 1 inch or 3/4 inch and you've got a socket that reduces the 1 inch to 3/4 like mine does?

I had some new blades for these, and no holder, so when I moved I sent them to the Salvation Army thrift store. Was just tired of having them in the way, and not worth the postage to ebay them. Too bad it isn't easier to connect with guys that need stuff, and get rid of your own excess.

I've been dealing with my excess stuff ever since I moved, with the goal of not putting any junk or extras into my new shop/garage/house when I get it done. I'm almost tired of it enough to load it into the truck and haul it to the thrift store. I'd bet that they'd take all of the 2000 or so sockets, wrenches, pliers, etc; all usa, many proto, SK, Bonney, and sell them for ten cents or a quarter each. And try to get $2 out of the Craftsman ones!

But, I'm persevering on, slowly but surely they're going away on the ebay. 15 to 50 a week; eventually they'll all be gone and in the hands of someone who wants them more than I.

3Bay: I've got some wrenches that sort of look like that with a different name on them. i'll have to maybe start a thread about them to get some more information.

AE: interesting because screw looks bent when I look at it. anyway glad it isn't and thanks for posting that cool stand. you might want to put a nice block or vise on it. still holding on to the C2? you can email or PM me anytime. also stop in my ORGANIZING thread and check out what i'm doing with some of my messes. also feel free to post pictures of your backyard on that thread for inspiration because i'm getting ready to re do mine. cheers

Interesting find from this weekend Proto LA 8" pipe wrench, first one I have seen in the flesh. Unfortunately it's missing it's nut, but other wise just need some love.

Howdy all, first post figured this is a good place to start. Decided to put together a vintage portable tool box and ran across this 3/8" set. I put the tools in the new box and I'll use the 3/8 box for a small under the seat kit for my '66 C10. Anyway, now I'm hooked on Plvmb. I missed a nice 1/4" set the other day when Ebay forced me to change my password  Oh well, it's fun shopping.

SCUDERIA: great looking set and welcome to the group. i hear you that Plvmb are nice tools that look great too. your little set looks pretty complete too, but then i can't recall what all was in that set when it sold 70 or so years ago.

keep up the hunt and wishing you the best.

ALL: stopped at a garage sale and picked up a little sumpin. i'll need to improve my metal bending skills and get slides spiffed up, but I think it's all there and even has the key that works and the front panel.

too bad the box was empty because i'm pretty sure the original tools were in it too so maybe they'll pop up here or on the Bay.

have a great weekend everybody

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Olson: the seller's asking price that was pretty fair if I can get the kinks worked out. I bought a mish mash of sockets and a couple boxes of sanding and grinding wheels that I really didn't need. the seller was the son of the owner that had passed and a nice guy and an old shop teacher so i'm hoping he snagged the good plvmb tools of his dad's or grampa's.

3Bay: I think it will end up on top of my bench because the patina matches a few other old green cabinets like this Printer's one I picked up a few weeks ago. I think it will go under my bench nicely but I have to build a few stands on each end of the bench to raise it 3 more inches.

ALL: what tools do you guys use to bend this old heavy gauge metal that these tool boxes are made of?

Found an old set of Plomb miniature slip joint pliers. Interesting, but really too light weight to do much with. More collectible than usable.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Finds for today anyone have information on this spring compressor?/QUOTE]

That spring compressor was a catalogue item in the late '30's and '40's.

It was advertised as a tool for inspecting valve springs for tension at a specified compressed length, which was set by a stop on the device.

It was used with a torque wrench, and meant as a less expensive substitute for the valve spring checkers of other makes, which had an inbuilt dial scale.

The practical use of this device related to a common practice of the time, a 'minimum cost' 'valve job', in which the valves were removed, the usual badly burned one(s) replaced with new, and the others 're-faced' on a 'valve grinder'.

The valve seats would be inspected for cracks, and if a crack was found, the head or block would be repaired by 'pinning' if the crack was minimal enough, and a 'seat ring' fitted. (sometimes, a crack would extend so far that the head, or block, in the case of side-valve engines, was not readily repairable, requiring the replacement of that head or block, much to the dismay of the vehicle's owner.....this was all too common with the Ford 'flathead' V8 engines)

The valve seats would be ground with a 'hard seat grinder' and 'narrowed' to suit the valves.

The valve spring inspection, using that device, was one aspect of this job, as any 'weak' valve spring would be replaced with new, if found. A weak or cracked/broken valve spring would cause a valve to burn fairly quickly, as the valve would not be adequately held to its seat.

(all this may well be 'more than you wanted to know', to be sure......but its the 'context' of that device......... a little glimpse into the daily work of the 'wrench pullers' of half-a-century ago.

cheers

Carla

My sockets are 1" drive. Sorry for the slow reply, I haven't been checking GJ much lately with school. :willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Carla: thanks for another great history lesson. you're the best.

Twertsy: was that one guy's collection or did you just get a few at several tables? WELL DONE in any case and some of the guys probably don't own that many Plvmb items period.

have you taken apart any of your Plvmb tool boxes yet? I haven't looked to close at my new acquisition, but since it's pretty dinged up i'd like to pull out all the drawers out and at least make them work better. it's nice I have the front cover and the key though so hoping to have this one full of Plvmb sitting on my bench.

Moor: i'm guessing you have several of those boxes now? nice find AGAIN. also thanks for the KUDOS about my toolbox find.

Filson: thanks for the 411. are your relatives still living with you which might be taking up all your free time to go on GJ?

ZEET: thanks and i'm hoping I can spiff it up a little because I do like the size and the lines of my new box.

Olson: nice finds and I probably would have not even looked twice at the valve spring tester. good eye

Scud: welcome to the forum and hope you stick around to give us more helpful tips. i'll probably use a little hammer and some steel plate to pound it straight, but we'll see.

Thank You for derusting them the way you did.
Too often I've seen tools screwed up by wire brushing.
It is amazing how it still keeps the older metal patina.

MOOR: I knew a golf club was called a Big Bertha and no idea our 1 inch ratchets were called that. that listing you found is actually in Sacramento or is this the ad? http://sacramento.craigslist.org/tls/5607057171.html

looks like a Proto but maybe it just has the replacement parts for the Plvmb.
I believe it started with the 7/8 drive plomb items I didn't know it carried to the 1"
