Hey DuroChrome, I don't have a combo wrench set and don't plan on going down that rabbit's hole for a while, but I have a stray 7/16 that would fit the set you're looking to complete. Got it at a pawn shop for like nothing and I really don't use it as much as I thought so if you need it I don't mind giving it to ya. It's not perfect, but I did a quick clean on it and it looks like it'll clean up well since it mostly has all the chrome still. PM me if you could get some use out of it

@four.cycle: That's a nice one for sure! I wonder how far it'll skyrocket from Saturday to end of auction... Any guesses?

^ not a clue. tool sales on Ebay right now are flat. lots of nice sets are getting zero bids. I am seeing sellers reducing prices on some items after they've been listed two or three weeks.
I couldn't speculate on price - I'm not delving into PLOMB quite yet. ;)

that's quite an impressive collection you've got there, hoinox11

I put up the first bid this morning. Thanks for the link.

Either I'm a cheapskate, or I only bid on things others want, because I've been outbid on dozens of lots over last couple of months. On the other hand, I won't bid on "low price" items that include higher than flat-rate shipping costs simply out of principle.

I would guess $40. They are quite common on eBay. Condition is decent

Hoinox: thanks for the detailed explanation of how you keep your hand tools in such great shape. good words about our tool addictions too compared to other addictions that seem to go down an entirely different RABBIT HOLE.

also nice of you to offer to help DC fill up his set with an extra you have. WELL DONE SIR!!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

So i was minding my business on the garage journal when I got a pm from wayno10 and he said he had a mini plvmb set if I wanted it he would send it to me :rocker:(I ended up trading some snappy items to him in return) He saw my signature of wanted items :pimpflash He send me the military 9/32nd drive plvmb set. It was complete but had some rust and overall had not been serviced in a long time. I cleaned it up and serviced the ratchet. I posted some before and after pictures. It does have 2 3/8th sockets and I am wondering if the WF sets had this and also if it is missing a driver handle like my civilian 1/4 drive? I took a before and after picture as well as a picture with my civilian set. The boxes are very similar in size and texture paint but the boxes construction is different and also the military box does not have the plvmb stamped into it but both have wrinkle paint on them but are different shades of green.

Drives, in response to your cleaning question. What I did for this set was I first soaked everything down with #1 engine degreaser, let sit for 15 minutes and then rinsed all degreaser off. I dried tools and box and then proceeded to wire wheel the areas on the tools where there was excessive rust built up. You can see it on the breaker bar and the extension. (**bear in mind I only cleaned up the rust to the point of removal and went no farther**. Plvmb tools from this era are cadium plated which is not good to breathe the dust). For the lighter rusted tools I use a light wire brush and scrub them down and then clean out sockets with a wire brush or brake clean. Then I wipe them down with rust penetrant and service the ratchet or wax the socket box if the finish is smooth.

I have also noticed this with a lot of really great stuff that just seems to go by the wayside. However I'm not too upset being that I've gotten to finally get in on some of the good stuff! Thank you on the collection compliments by the way!

No you're not a cheapskate, Plomb collectors are ruthless and apparently loaded. I feel your pain as I've lost most of the items I've gone for that were Plomb. Hell some of them I even went way out of my comfort zone financially in bidding and still lost by a long shot... Thanks for the link by the way, I'll bookmark it

No problem! I've found if nothing else is going on that cleaning up tools can be very relaxing/therapeutic. In regards to the last part all I can say is people have helped me out when I needed something so all I'm doing is returning the favor

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Here's some more pics by the way of the random cool stuff.

Descriptions:

-9/16x1/2 DOE "Plomb TM" wrench from the first few years of production
-3/4 stock "Plomb tool mfg co" cold chisel also from early production
-1920's 3/4" p&c with a blued finish. Also have a socket and 16" extension to match. Note: Interesting part is that in all of my hunting on the internet the only picture I've found of one of their outside head breakers was in a scanned copy of their 20's catalog, so this may be the first modern picture taken of one to date.
-3/8" Plomb pebble ratchet (not special but obscenely shiny)
-Older Bog Mfg Co Dandy socket set. No stars or dates on the sockets so I assume its late 20s. 100% certain the ratchet is indestructible

Cool stuff! I agree about Plomb eBay bidding...I get sniped all the time and I usually have put my bid at a little more than I think it's worth, especially if it's really nice. Sometimes I pay a little extra if I really have been looking for something or it is a clean set.

I love P&C too but it is the same thing with people spending outlandish amounts.

Here is my 3/4" ratchet with a 1/4" for scale.

a bit off-topic here, but:

This isn't exclusive to PLOMB or any other brand. I've seen it on Indestro / Duro Chrome / Herbrand / Thorsen / Stevens Walden / and even Craftsman.
Apparently there's an "app" you can get that will automatically outbid other bidders at the last minute, so unless you're sitting at the keyboard when the auction closes and ready to enter a bid within the last 8 seconds you might be out of luck.
It has nothing to do with "cheapskate". There are some people who really want a particular item and are willing to pay crazy prices for it.

I have auction sniper...but I usually just set my bid to the most I want to pay.

I got sniped on some Plomb catalogs and literature a while back and I'm still bummed. I didn't set my bid high enough!!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

yikes!

I'd say pretty steep... but I'm not familiar with PLOMB values.

a few months back I picked up a 4502 Duro-Chrome 1/4" drive set (black finish - early type - but NOT marked " D I " ) for $20. + shipping.

Ebay is a weird animal .... no matter how oddball the item is, sooner or later another one is going to turn up. Can't even begin to count how many times I've seen that happen, and I've only been using Ebay for about 10 months.

nobody out there has the last of any one tool. there's always another one in grandpa's basement collecting dust somewhere.

Scored these plastic handle proto and plvmb screwdrivers and screw extractors for $4. Also included a 1/4 drive handle/extension that is nearly in mint condition :rocker:

I didn't even know those driver handles had the stripe.
Been trying to find one for awhile, but having a hard time justifying new Proto cost for the ones on Ebay.

Yeah, honestly most of the time people want way too much for the plomb stuff IMHO. What gets me though is that a lot of them have "rare" or something to that effect in the title which is almost never true. Hell the Duro Chrome stuff is way harder to come across and most of the time it's much cheaper.

I couldn't agree with you more on this. Waiting *****, but seriously another one damn near always pops up if you wait.

How are the proto/plomb screwdrivers? I've been curious about this for a while, because I've tried a good number of brands and for me the smooth red hard handled Mac ones blow everything else out of the water (even snap on). Haven't tried proto ones yet though. Is the cut on the phillips pretty precise?

The drivers I don't really use very often but they feel pretty good in your hand. For sure they feel better than the snappy of the same era. The proto better-grips feel even better than these and I think they feel better than the snappy's as well. I like these screwdrivers because you can see the progression of the screwdriver from wood handle to this style and then to the better grip. I also like how you can see that snap on totally stole the design of the handles of their screwdrivers from these drivers that where out years before their "hard handles" came out. On a side note I went back to the habitat yesterday and found another different plvmb driver handle :rocker: and another plastic handle plvmb long flat tip. I will post some pics later

I have a lot of both the Proto and Snap on drivers. Probably 50 to 75 of each. I like the proto flats, but I don't like the shape of their phillips. They're hard enough, but they tend to slip long before a Snap-on one will. I have two new #1 phillips proto that I got in the 1990's. I've tried for a long time to like them, but they've been entirely retired because of how much better the Snap-on ones work. On the other hand, I almost entirely use my Proto flat drivers in preference to the Snap-on, particularly the larger ones. The proto have less taper on the tip than the Snap-on, so seem to work better. I have to hollow grind the Snap-on to get them to perform similarly.

Very true! The snappys have better shanks but the protos have better handles

Going through the wrenches I found this double box offset wrench with a w after the size and the the size doesn't correspond with the opening in the wrench and no 4 digit part mark any ideas
