Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I picked up this Plvmb incomplete 1/4 set may have already posted a pic in this thread. Was moving stuff around today saw this thought I'd clean up the extension and t handle.

The 7 sockets, extension, and t handle all have an OA stamped into them, the sockets have the MADE over the IN. So these would be from 1940?
What other pieces would have been in this set?

Well I can tell it is missing a ratchet. I think you need a 1/4 pebble ratchet but I think it is otherwise complete? May need a new driver handle as the one in the picture is past is prime...

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I picked up 4 sockets yesterday. Not pictured because they aren't all that exciting are a 3/4" drive, 1 1/2" socket and a 3/8" drive, 7/16" socket. Pictured are the two that got me excited.

- Plomb "War Finish", 1/2" drive, 1" socket
- Plomb 1/2" drive, 31/32" socket.

Dave - You probably have the 4700A set. The extension is an extra and your are missing the 8pt sockets

Thanks Chopper, interesting the ext doesn't belong, it is stamped the same OA (except that spinner, handle too far gone). I also don't think there are supposed to be holes drilled in the box; lid and bottom. I paid $2 for it, iirc.

For 2 bucks you got a steal. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding the 1/4" & 5/16" 8 pt sockets or replacing the spinner handle if you want to complete the set.
The holes weren't an option but I'd leave the box as is.

I was sorting tools today and I took photos of the Plomb 1/2" drive sockets in my collection. There aren't many, but I am slowly filling in the gaps.

What is the wobble or universal on the upper right. Looks odd.

Proto Los Angeles Impact swivel. The 3 sockets at the top of the picture are also PRoto Los Angeles. There's also a Plomb impact socket (9/16") in the picture. It's sitting under the standard 9/16" near the far right of the line of sockets.

This is a Plomb 4749 ratchet I've had for years...I cannot remember where I got it. I do use it occasionally in very tight quarters. It came with the shown 1/2" Craftsman socket (which shows a marking of an H in a circle).

I never really looked up any info on it before today, but the 4749 is listed as a 1/4" ratchet. I suppose someone made this one into a 3/8" ratchet decades ago. There's no detent to hold a socket.

Both the ratchet and socket were modified for a special job. Thanks for sharing!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I used to know a guy, who went by "Red", who would buy storage units and such, and deal in junk. I acquired a lot of tools from him that way. Here are my biggest Plomb wrenches, which came from "Red". These are 1 1/16" by 15/16, and I think the only thing I've ever used them for was to tighten a trailer ball nut.

This is my nice, clean 5249 3/8" ratchet which sees occasional use when the mood strikes me.

That 3/8 flare wrench is a very rare Plomb/Proto transitional piece.
Calling Twertsy, calling Twertsy!
Yup, haven't seen one of those.......I don't think. I "might" have one.

So are Firestone sockets and breaker bars made by Plomb? I have some Firestone tools that were old when I bought them in 1978, and I've been using them for years. I see a family resemblance in the breaker bar - it has the same pebbling in the handle.

Firestone 1/2" drive sockets, 11/16" through 1"

Proto / Plomb flare wrenches.

I have a few Proto tools I bought when I started at Cessna in 1978. If there's any interest I could post pictures of them too.

Sorry Bomber, that hammer is a Plumb not a Plomb

Why is the thread showing an underline on the word 'hammer'? I didn't do it.
Whoops, you're right. I knew about the legal battle that changed Plomb to Proto, but stupidly hasn't thought that would mean there would be actual Plumb tools out there too.
