Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Here are some of my Proto tools which were new in 1978 when I hired on at Cessna.

The 1/4" set also had a ratchet and a socket driver, which have been lost over the years. I've replaced them with modern Stanley/Proto pieces.

And a punch set, which I think is still available as a new set.

I thought it would be appropriate to give you gentlemen a heads up on these.
Am I correct in assuming those letters stamped on the shanks are date codes?

All from the same seller. Looks like he's got some other Plomb stuff as well.

My first wrenches I ever owned were like new 1960's era protos in flying lady pouches at the cost of climbing in a dumpster. I almost left them, because at 16, I had never heard of proto. It wasn't until the past couple years I really started researching proto...which led to collecting Plomb and tac among others. First picture are a few of my favorites second picture is some of what came out of the dumpster that started it all. Unfortunately most of the plomb tools are buried in boxes until a shop is up.

Nice find. Yet to find a plomb or proto flying lady bottom box anywhere close to my neck of the woods, not even any that aren't for sale

Does anyone know about Kiowa Ratchets? I found one in my grand dads tools in mint shape with his Plomb and it looks almost identical. Im thinking it was made by Plomb as well. Cant find much info on it. I'll post a pic of it tonight after work.

Yep - same seller. He has 4 total ratchets. Hoping to get lucky on a couple of them.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I love seeing these old tools. I try and grab onto the old stuff whenever i see it. im wondering if this socket set had some influence to that.

I have had this old socket set since i was around 10 (25 now). When my grandfather passed away years ago this was in some of the stuff the family was cleaning out of the garage. For some reason i have always cherrished this little set, i know it isnt anything super special, but i have always thought it was so cool to have the case with the ratchet.

Have any of you seen this set and maybe know what im missing? It contains the listed tools, all 1/4"

breaker bar, ratchet, t bar, 6" extention

6pt sockets
7/16 (x2) ,3/8, 11/32 , 5/16, 9/32, 1/4, 7/32

8pt
5/16, 1/4

id love to be able to find any missing sockets, but thats a long shot im sure! ill have to add some of my stepfathers stuff. he has alot of plomb and proto tools. one of the coolest being a 3/4" aluminum proto ratchet. he brought it home from work because everyone only would use that ratchet and was afraid someone would break it being an idiot. somthing like that is too cool to let someone careless break it!

That depends upon whether you're buying or selling.
That set would fetch a goodly sum on Ebay, and it appears to be about 99% complete; it may or may not have contained a 3/16" or 1/2" 6-point socket, but it most likely originally contained a 3/8" 8-point.
Without even looking, it should be fairly easy to find the 3/16" 6-point and the 3/8" 8-point on Ebay - those sizes are usually abundant in used 1/4" drive (regardless of brand.) The 1/2" 6-point, on the other hand, might pose a challenge - I just paid $6.00 for an old Indestro 1/4" drive 1/2" 12-point, and it was the first one I've seen listed in months.
They are out there though- it just takes a while to find some of them.

Somebody here who actually knows Proto/Plomb would be better able to tell you if something's missing.

Nice little set. I'll add to what four.cycle said in that it may also have included a 1/4" drive nut spinner handle.

Looking at a couple Plomb catalogs, a spinner was never included in a set with a ratchet, in that size box. That set is probably a 4700B. Included were, 7/32 to 7/16 6 pt and 1/4 & 5/16 8 pt sockets, ratchet and T-bar. [no extensions or hinge handle]

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

thanks for the info guys. so it really looks like this set is complete as far as we know plus a couple extras? i always thought i was missing half of the kit because there seems to be alot of extra space for small bits or somthing.

i just looked up a date code list and checked out the dates on the tools. it validates what kit you think it is Chopper1. all of the tools are date coded 1941 except the 3/8, 9/32, one 7/16, breaker bar, and extention. so im assuming a couple sockets were replaced and the other tools added.

Ahh... thanks Chopper!
I know some of the older ones didn't go down to 3/16" but I'm not well-versed on Proto/Plomb.
Odd that they'd include 1/4" and 5/16" 8-points, but not 3/8", but I've seen newer Proto sets that way too. Maybe that's exclusive to Proto?

I had mentioned "spinner" in my post above but edited it out when I looked at the photos again. I don't know how you'd fit a spinner in there and be able to close the box!

So... nitro: where at in Washington are you located?

Not my auction, but something I spotted tonight. It seems to be a Plomb 3/4" drive socket set.

If I had money I'd be all over that. At swap meet last Sunday or one before, dude wanted $200 for a 3/4 plomb ratchet or $500 for it with sockets up to inch and a half

thought i'd mention that there currently is a Proto Lite 5650 3/4" drive ratchet buy-it-now offering on ebay. i finally picked one up at the swap meet when it almost fell into my lap while i was chatting with the seller. this seller saves Plomb, old Blue-Point and Snap-on pieces for me to view before putting them out for sale. he hadn't thought i'd be interested in the Proto ratchet which i'd been looking for over a fair amount of time and was on my short-list. it is incredibly lighter than my Plomb 5649 3/4" drive pebble ratchet.

Thanks! most of them are pretty nice, some have some plating spots but not too bad. I want them all I think I might have a problem lol
Haha. It only took me about years to get all the combos in pebble. Be careful it is a slippery slope.

The 1/4 artisan is a tough find. If one hits eBay it usually brings $80. If you get it you will have to post some pics.

For some reason I'm having a hard time finding out what is the smallest " Pebble " combination wrench made; the 1208? I've been trying to google without much luck.
I have the 1210 in pebble and and a bunch of 1208 in non-pebble Plombs & Proto.

Did they make the 1208 in Pebble?
