I was reorganizing some of my tool boxes when I came across these. I haven't seen too many with logos like this.

I took a couple of pictures of my 3/4" sets while moving some of my tool boxes around. Does anyone know the story behind the 2 ring and 5 ring sockets? I have a fairly complete set of each.

I know that some of the 5 rings are stamped LA so I assume they would be an earlier design. I really like the 5 ring look on the socket.

Back in early October I picked up a large lot of well worn chisels and bunches. They were shown in post #2783. Since I had some spare time today, I thought that I would go through them.I started with the capes chisels and then did the rest. The last picture is a few P&C chisels.

I was doing a little cleaning yesterday and found a Plomb auto body hammer I had totally forgotten I had... :) Turns out I bought it at a swap meet a few years back and even posted pictures of it in this thread, but I don't have any memories of it.

Does it count if you find a new tool, but it's already in your own garage? :p

I thought so too. Wonder if they had Plomb help to make or just copied Pebble background.. maybe Twertsy knows something about this...

It does look interesting but it doesn't look like a JPD/Plomb wrench. Haven't seen very many Waldens so I'm not sure if they made them in-house or had them contract made by somebody else.

the pebble is spaced out a bit more it seems. but its strange, you'd think Plomb wouldn't be cool with this. I actually saw another Walden Worcester 10" adj wrench at the dflea.. but it had a dif design.. it had a small strip of a window that almost looked like pebble.. they wanted 15 so it stayed put.

Walden certainly didn't have any shortage of forging facilities, and off the top of my head I'd be surprised if they were outsourcing something like that, but who knows?
I picked through the few catalogs I have here but there are no adjustable wrenches shown in any of them.

Did Plomb copyright the "pebble" design? If not, it was fair game to be used by others.

That's a good question. I asked in this thread a few days ago when I found this if anyone else knew of other tool makers that made pebble as well. think two were mentions. One was P&C, which would fall pretty much under Plomb. Other Ill have to go back and look..

I have searched online and cant even find a pic of this wrench anywhere so far. strange.

Interesting find. Certainly not a JPD made wrench. My bet is in house made. For some reason I'm pretty sure these have come up before, but it's been a while.

I have an 8-inch Walden adjustable (model number "A8") with a pebbled grip handle. Mine is a different pattern than Rag's "A10", which creates that large very unusual raised area around the hanging hole. That distinction and the marking differences would suggest to me that they were in production for quite a few years.

The 1940 Walden catalog doesn't include any adjustable wrenches. The 1954 Walden catalog does, and the illustration is like mine, with a raised panel for the forged-in brand markings inside the pebbled grip field (it says 'A8 MADE IN U.S.A.' on the raised panel on the flip side). EDIT: The catalog illustration does not show a pebbled grip. See TA for both catalogs.

While Walden was certainly capable of their own production, I am on the fence on that. They showed no interest in them for fifty years. To me it seems like a tool they would've outsourced to quickly expand their line. Note that many mfgrs equally capable outsourced this tool, to include Plomb, of course.

Plomb's pebble period started with drive tools and flare nut wrenches in late 1944 and expanded to all wrenches in 1946. At that time, Utica was supplying the adjustable crescent type wrenches to Plomb. After late 1946, they were supplied by J.P. Danielson.

I do agree with Todd that Rag's was not made by J.P. Danielson, and neither was mine. They weren't made by Utica, either. Note that they both have a hex gullet. Utica and J.P. Danielson both made adjustable crescent type wrenches for Plomb with a square gullet.

I don't know about Rag's example, but mine is cheaply made. It has a much thinner profile than any vintage adjustable I own and feels like pot metal, frankly. To verify, I weighed it. It weighs 5.2 ozs.

I also weighed a few other 8-inch adjustables, for comparison. A 1941 J.P. Danielson BET'R GRIP, a 1941 JPD-made Craftsman Vanadium, and a 1953 JPD-made Proto 708-S all weighed 7 ozs. A wartime Diamalloy weighs 6.5 ozs. A wartime Wiliams weighs 6.5 ozs. A Crescent (with the thick head) weighs 8.3 ozs.

the 10" I have is a brute. It is very heavy and feels thicker than any other adjustable I would say it is very well built! I saw another at the flea as I sad earlier. wished I'd taken a pic of it, it had an inlay little box like both of these other examples. But, the pebble was ONLY inside the little box where the lettering was. And it was nowhere near as pronounced as this 10" a10. Here are some pictures with a 10: diamond side by side with the A10. Noticed the thumb wheel only has three ribs where most have 4.

Here's a beefier 10" WW adjustable pebble:
Notably yet a third style compared to my 8 and Rag's 10. Unlike Rag's, but like mine, it has the elongated oval panel where the branding is forged. But mine has an all plain block lettering 'WALDEN WORCESTER' brand on that panel, whereas this one has the extended W-lines above the lettering brand.

Not to break further off into a wild Walden tangent, but I think the variation in styles, markings, and robustness further confirms no relationship to these and Plomb.

Cool adjustable wrenches! I hadn't seen any other pebble patterns other than Plomb...I'll have to keep my eyes open. Thanks for posting.

Sorry, I can't explain how those Irwins photobombed me.

Looks like pretty much a 4700A set set all '37 or '38 except I cant tell about the wasted spin handle, or the bar I hope fits the holes at the back of extensions(I don't know if it belongs, or is even Plomb). I'd be missing one socket, but with added 2 deeps and 2 carb sockets. DOE's are
11/16--25/32 Maybe greenish coating
1 1/16--1 1/4 heavy owners mark
1 1/4--1 7/16 "

The 9" Extra Heavy Duty Machinist's screwdriver is highly desirable by WWII collectors. They went in several kits, including the Machinist's Tool-Set, and the early war Motor Vehicle Mechanics Tool-Set. Tobrin, Federal, and Irwin were suppliers - and that ink-stamped handle with no markings on the shank is a wartime tell. I'd be interested in trading for it if you're not wedded to the idea of keeping it.

Maybe...depending how the resto of my other one turns out I havent quite got the order of assembly right yet. You have dibs if I do pass it on. the wood looks almost too good to be that old, handle was varnish dipped. The smaller one has no markings and a 7 stamped on the handle.
Ill put a better pic in the garage sale thread.

I've been looking for a 1/4 box for over a year, forgot to bid a few nice ones on ebay.
One of the market regulars pulled me aside and got it out of his backpack as Id bought other vintage stuff from him before. $40 with the small DOE felt like a win. I', m not sure I like the 5 way split in the box, the long sections have an odd raised floor. I'll wash it up and see how it plays with my other 1/4 bits.

Any fun ideas for what to make from the spin handle?

Also I think I figured out rhe pin bar... it fits not snug in a 3/8 extension....unless its supposed to be snug in a 9/32's??? It does engage the retainer ball.
