wow how cool didnt know they made leather working tools! thats awesome! My uncle is a boot and saddle maker has been for 40 years. I should look at all his tons of tools when I'm there next. Ill look through my spreadsheet later and see what I have got!

The FC date code on the Philips, and black oxide on the LA DOE are probably the most noteworthy of the lot.

Complete minus the tommy bar, with six point sockets. There were a couple of 12 pointers in there also, one of which was a war finish.

Great find. That transition wrench is one that is date coded but I couldn’t quite make out the code in your picture. Can you get a closer shot of it please? I’m assuming 1948.

Thanks for posting those. It looks like your broached end one was made in ‘47 and the transition wrench in ‘48. Very cool!

With stamped (not forged-in) brand markings on Rag's and Provincial's recent dual-branded "transition" finds, consistent with others we were tracking and mini deep diving on a few months ago. When they were made by J.P. Danielson is unquestionable. When they were stamped and sold by Plomb with those dual-branded markings remains an interesting open debate.

I just went through my mess of wrenches and I only have the one I show in my spreadsheet. its not in very good condition sad to say. I believe I found that one digging in an old tool box at the flea market.

My experience, over the three or four years that I spent assembling my Plomb pebble combo set one piece at a time, was that the 1212 3/8" wrench (for reasons unknown to me) as the toughest one to find. Tougher, even, than the baby 1210. Can't explain why.

Here are some pics of a 1/2" ratchet that I picked up today at a garage sale. Appears to be very much like a Plomb WF-38 but not marked as such. One side is blank (although the center portion is noticeably smoother than the surrounding area - almost like it could have possibly been a lawsuit grind-off). Not sure if this side once had the Plomb name and plumb bobs on it. The other side of the handle is marked only "Made in U.S.A." I assume of both of the faceplate screws are replacements. Probably the slotted one for sure. It was dry as a bone inside, but the condition of the internals was "like new" otherwise. After lubrication it runs smoothly and quietly. Nice ratchet.

Anybody seen one like this?

I've also seen them this way before. I recently picked one up at a flea market like this and when I disassembled it to clean and lube I noticed the WF-38 marking was on the inside of the plate. Apparently the PO just put it back on without regard to the markings showing.

I thought that would be the case with this one as well, but when I opened it up the other side was blank as well. I wonder if this ratchet might have been a civilian version of the WF-38?

That looks to be an example in outstanding condition, Dan!

My Early Bird flea market this morning yielded a a Plomb MADE IN U.S.A. 5340 (1/2-inch drive deep socket with a crossbar hole and a 12-point 1/2" service opening) and a Proto MFD. U.S.A. 4769 (1/4-inch drive spinner/extension).

The Proto spinner was a funny buy. It's this guy who fashions himself an antiques tool guy, but he paints or varnishes the **** out of everything. He's there every week with his wife. She'll put some things out, too. But he's the tool guy. They always have two tables. One table is a $1 table. And the other table - where all the stuff he wants more for because he "restored" it - is much pricier, and he lets you know it, pridefully, whether you asked or not. Guess which table the spinner/extension was on? The $1 table, of course. HAHA. It's these tiny satisfactions that get me through the day.

I found a few super generic Plomb/Proto empire DOEs at the flea today. No brand marking on them at all, only marked with MFD USA.

Went to flea today and the turn out was much smaller than expected. With in the first 5 mins I spotted this old Plomb box. Never seen one in the wild. It is a little messed up but not terrible. Ended up with it for $25. Next I spotted some 5 band 4/4 drive sockets. Picked them up at $2 each. Lastly a group of small Plomb wrenches for $.25 each and it had a 1212 pebble. All in all a good day.

Picked up a few pieces of Plomb yesterday and I am wondering if anyone know what actually belongs in the 2403 case.I assume ignition tool kit but Google isn't helping me much.
Also some 3/4" drive,and 1/2'' drive sockets sockets, and a wrench.

Picked up a few pieces of Plomb yesterday and I am wondering if anyone know what actually belongs in the 2403 case.

Punches and chisels. It's in that section in every 1930's and 1940's catalog. Showing six (6) pockets. In the 1941 catalog it's listed for the No. 3 Punch & Chisel set. In the 1943 and 1945 catalogs it's listed for two sets: No. 47A Pin Punches and No. 50A Starting Punches. So you have some options. See those catalogs on Tool Archives for details. The ignition wrenches came in roll-ups 2410 and 2411.

EDIT: See page 70 in Catalog 19-R, since you were already looking through it.
