What Lugz said. Here are the sets that I imagine came in that roll, even though it’s not spelled out.

Scored some good plomb stuff at the flea this morning. 1/2" firestone ratchet. WF30, 5416, and 5020 sockets. 3320 ignition wrench. And an "A PLOMB" 5/16" wrench- a first for me.

My experience, over the three or four years that I spent assembling my Plomb pebble combo set one piece at a time, was that the 1212 3/8" wrench (for reasons unknown to me) as the toughest one to find. Tougher, even, than the baby 1210. Can't explain why.

That’s true and odd that the 5/16 for me was easier also. Aside from the 3/8, I’m looking for the 1-3/8.

Has anyone here considered a re-chromed or Nickle-plate on their Plomb wrench sets?

Very Nice! Those wall boards are awesome, nice setup.

I plan to do the same on my Pebble finish combination wrench 15pc set. (17 when complete)

Another question:
Has anyone attempted to Weld fill & grind away owners marks?

My Plomb 1242 has 5 grinder marks center / outer edge approx 55 thou deep.

I was thinking on using 308L .030 Stainless wire then grind/stage sand smooth for plating.

If anyone else has made weld repairs/touch ups on these wrenches, please post what wire / stick you used.

I know heat can be a factor. I once used 308L wire to repair a crack on an Antique Fulton Vise.

I moved slowly & used sand to control the heat a little. After grinding & sanding it turned out better than expected.

Thanks for any input.

I have a few that I am pretty sure were re-chromed at some point, I will dig them out when I have a bit more time.

So, not Plomb, but Plomb Empire, and economy line (to Proto) at that, but this is a neat find in my book if only because in nearly ten years of tool collecting, I have never seen another Challenger DOE engineers wrench. Are they left coast common and right coast rare? Or rare everywhere? We've seen a number of fantastic Challenger socket sets pop up here, from the original line in 1939/1940 (Carla, d42jeep), to possibly late 40's/early 1950's (Oldtuleguy) to 60's/70's (mine, among others), but I don't recall seeing any Challenger DOE engineers wrenches. I'll be honest and say I didn't even know they made them like this. The DOE engineers wrenches in my PENENS Master Set are made by J.P. Danielson in the old Controlled Steel panel style. If anyone has any, please post them. I am curious about styles and model numbers. I kind of like the Challenger helmet symbol.

This example is marked 11/16 MFD. 5722 challenger ALLOY USA. 19/32 with a little solid triangle forged into the flip side. Anyone know anything about that triangle marking? ([edit]It's not the Bonney-Herbrand-Utica Triangle mark, which wouldn't make sense anyway.[/edit])

While I do see the later marked Challenger by Proto, I don't see many examples like yours here in Oklahoma, but admittedly I don't typically look for them.

found a few Plomb pieces so far this weekend...

WF23k speedster number3 in the last two months.

Long orange handled driver with a little red stripe left on it.

Yellow handled philips driver

#7 1/2 Plomb LA chisel

DBE 1139, wf84, wf85,

DOE 3440

noticed 1139 has USA stamped on the back also, I haven't noticed that before I guess I should look at my other wrenches...

Nice haul! I've not seen that lone USA mark on any of my Plomb wrenches before.

I frequently see the Taiwan versions but usually they don't have the end cap. That one does look like a closer copy for sure!

At a recent estate sale, there were three screwdrivers with that configuration (wood handle with metal cap). Two were Taiwanese; one either Proto or Plomb. I left the Taiwanese.

Flea market finds. A 1236 combo, a right angle flat head, and a barely recognizable 5416 socket.

That's impressive. I have started to use a Google sheet to keep track of what I have and what I am missing. Helped me a lot from buying doubles at fleas.

Sent from my XT1080 using The Garage Journal mobile app

yup me too. I keep mine on the Google spreadsheet. But I have yet to add the non pebble and transitional stuff to it yet. I always buy doubles... If I see Plomb its coming home with me. have triplets of few things

How else would you know which ones are easy to find?

I don't need 3, 4 ring sockets, WF-81 or long extension come to mind as 'needs'?

well I just cant walk away and leave Plomb there unless its CRAZY priced. I have seen that a few times. Wrenches $50 plus. One guy wanted $100 for a REALLY rusty 3/4 pebble ratchet, that I need. But no way Im paying that. unless it was pristine condition.

At the last swap meet after I picked up a few green boxed WW2 defrosters a guy saw them in my cart and we struck up a conversation about them. I told him they reminded me of Plomb boxes and that is what had drawn me to them. Anyway he said he had a Plomb box I may be interested in so I got his number.

Today I went down to see him and was able to make a deal on this Toolmobile as well as a few other boxes including a small Plomb mechanics box. It wasn't exactly cheap at $400 but nice and very complete including the keys and drawer dividers. Besides I had a spot for it...A few pics fresh off the truck and a couple in the shop where it will live. Also one of the smaller Plomb box and a mis-matched puller set that was part of the deal. Sorry Smoke but you can't get them all. :) Ed.

Dang it, you are cutting into my monopoly I have on this area of pressteel rollers [emoji23] I know it went to a good home and I also noticed yours has the perforated drawers and stamped logos on the side. Nice pick up on the puller as well! I have been looking for one but have not found one yet in the wild! What does your key look like ? Is it an Illinois marked key ? Those are the original ones if it is!

Outstanding find! And for the record, I don't think Smoke has actually found any Plomb boxes in the wild - he just finds ways of acquiring them from those of us who do. Beware!
