Has anyone ever seen that exact version of the Plomb 4795 box in a Plomb catalog? Or in the flesh, with dark olive green paint, and routine Plomb midget tools in it? The closest I can find is in Catalog 19R REPRINT, which I date to NET 2/1944 to NLT 10/1946. I say close because it's very similar but missing the one partition. (See Pic 1.)
The figure the US Navy ASO catalog was using as late as 1944 is the typical Plomb 4795, which had obviously been eclipsed at some point. (See Pic 2.)
ummm. yes.
That was my lame attempt at humor but the comment stands. Keep the posts coming! Love seeing the rare or nos stuff from the time machine [emoji23]

Yes, I was. I've only seen them with the five compartments like that on the gray NAF boxes. Thanks for the info. And please post a pic if you get a chance.Lug, are you asking about the box like the NAF box from the auction in the usual olive green? If so, I have at least a couple of those in the usual green paint.
No, you are spot on. I'm just trying to mix it up a little. may not be for everybody but, oh well.....

EDIT: I have this set/box - which is the same as the one I showed from the catalog. But it's not quite the same (only four compartments).

Thanks, Don. Now that I think about it, I suppose I have seen them before. Here are Grey and Green.
They are. But the bigger boxes were rounded off a lot earlier than the smaller ones. It will not surprise you to hear that I have developed a chart on boxes by year, color, and shape of corners!d42jeep said:Apparently the square corner boxes are earlier than the boxes with the rounded off corners.
Beemer motivated me. I need to double-check it. (Not sure why you posted that though. Both your boxes have sharp corners. EDIT: Never mind. I see why. That catalog is late, that's why they're rounded. But I had to use that because I couldn't find an early version of that same box - or a box with 5 compartments - in any early catalogs.)Thanks, Don. Those "brilliant Chinese red" boxes are more complex than an easy prewar/wartime determination. If you recall my post on box colors, linked here, that color was introduced in Catalog 18A, which I date from 8/40 to at least 10/41 (date of PL in back). The boxes were still "brilliant Chinese red" in Catalog 19, which I date to NET 11/41 to NLT 3/43, but it had a PL in the back that was heavily affected by WPB L-216 and other WPB orders, so clearly already a wartime catalog, and the boxes were probably already green. The next catalog (19) was the one with all the WPB redlines and the note about "All boxes being GREEN." So who knows exactly when they went from red to green. Probably early. But if I had a red box with wartime tools in, I would consider it early war. Or medical.I’ve been told that this is a prewar box.
Wait. Wh-wh-what? That's like asking a barfly to ignore the liquor in the bottles.d42jeep said:Just ignore the tools in it.
Plomb USN NAF set, complete minus one 3/8 6-pt socket, 1108-7. I overpaid but, who cares, I've never seen one before.
Thanks there is some up above.Olson: while I don't have the space for full on tool boards anymore I do like looking at them even if homemade. have you posted pictures of your big white Plvmb board before? if so i missed it so would you mind posting a few more full size pics?
thanks in advance!!
ALL: I was driving to the gym with my bride and had a minute to stop at a garage sale (she shook her head and grabbed a book she had in my car) so i said i'd be quick. too bad I didn't get there earlier in the day cause he had bins of plvmb and Craftsman tools. funny he marked the plvmb and older tools bin at $3 each wrench and the Craftsman bin at $5. i'll get a few pictures to post when daylight arrives here today in the sunny PNW.
I only found a few Plvmb, but while I was talking to the son cause this was Dad's tools he said somebody came in early and bought all the tool boxes which i think he had marked at $5 & $10.
Here is some updated pics.Olson: I saw the partial ones you just posted. did you mean there are more full size pictures if I check the thread back a few more days or months here?
looks like you've got 2 good size pieces of white peg boards full of plvmb?

What's the date code, Dan?

I fished a 4" dual marked adjustable out of the 50 cent bin at an estate sale today! Super stoked
No problem. I do have alot of extras since every item on the board is unique. I only have 2 socket boxes and 1 small tool box (beside 1/4 drive). The board helps me focus on what I need and what I dont. Making great strides to finish the 76 or 78 pebble Plomb wrenches same as Stormking did earlier this year. Down to 5 left to find and as Stormking said the DOEs are by far the most hardest (the only ones I am still looking for a source).Olson: thanks for posting all the peg boards and all your Plvmb and PROTO made in L.A. tools. WELL DONE SIR!!
just curious do you still have the old Plvmb tool boxes full of more Plvmb goodness or are the toolboxes now empty to you can see them all on your boards?
thanks again and keep up the great work finding all of them.
Alot of nice items there. And the hard to find 5466.Estate sale pick-up.
