Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Now I am confused. What I thought I had I don't think I do. So what do I have?
The dimensions of the shanks measure 9/16" AF. There is no stamping of sizes just a single number. Each socket is 5" long. The smallest socket is 13/16" and largest is 1". There is not ball dedents in any of the sockets. Can't find anything trolling the internet.

That's the General Utility Socket Set. It had 9/16-inch external drive sockets and a ratchet with a 9/16-inch female drive opening. The Truck and Tractor Set (also referred to as the Big Bertha Socket Set) had the bigger 7/8-inch drive size sockets and ratchet. See the last page of the 1925 catalog. The smaller set had Y model numbers and the bigger set had Z.

Wow. I am surprised they were still carrying any hand forged external drive style sets as late as 1933! That's several years after they introduced detachables. I guess they found a willing market still available with truckers.

Picked up this great old PLOMB roller from my deceased neighbor. The bottom lift door is a bit janky but the drawers and rollers work as new, it’s a great piece.

I've never heard or seen of early Plomb hand-forged socket drive tools being hex drive, Roy. I'm pretty sure his were 9/16-inch square. His set came in a home-made wooden box with a ratchet, the speeder, a Ford main bearing square box wrench, and a cope of early stud pullers as I recall.

As for the detents, my guess would be yours are slightly earlier. It's the same set, though.

Thanks for the heads up and finding that catalogue picture. Kind of makes me wonder how the hell they made to a small farm in Western MN.
Also I have to ask. Do you know what catalog the single open end engineer wrenches are in (35XX). Still having trouble locating that set.

Found them very rusty in the bottom of a 50 Cal ammo can. The auction had some PWA piece which I have never seen in the wild. I almost over looked them until my dad showed me them. Makes me wonder the story behind them.

You have the dedents as well. Mine are 5" OAL. Could you take a pic of the markings. Mine look very similar to the early chisels with Plomb Tool Co. And no size stamping.

Got this from that guy selling all the old plomb stuff on ebay, this was the first thing he listed, before he started selling everything one piece at a time.

Got a tip this came from the late George Robins collection, of prairiesville , Louisiana.

There are about 150 dupes, mostly sockets. Some dupes are variations of the same number, like pebble, rope band, etc.

You gave me an idea of seeing how many uniques I have. I got through the wrenches, drive tools, sockets, and screwdrivers. I did count a pebble variants and la and not la as a unique.

I don't see any 35XX SOE wrenches in the catalogs I have. 36XX water pump wrenches. And they made some 34XX SOE tappets for a few years. I could be missing them. Didn't Don (d42jeep) post a catalog image of them? He would know. Or am I thinking of different wrenches?

Good to know Greg that I am not the only one.
They appear to be 40s design but not in any catalogues. I have been trying to piece the list together by eBay listings and internet searches.
So far I know the set goes up to 2-1/4" and down to 7/16"

Found the 7/8's socket yesterday, giving me a complete 5400AB set, with a couple extras. I will keep adding pieces to make the 5400OC set, but for now, I am pretty happy.

Found the 7/8's socket yesterday, giving me a complete 5400AB set, with a couple extras. I will keep adding pieces to make the 5400OC set, but for now, I am pretty happy.

That is a sweet set up ! I would like to see it at some point in time. I picked up its big brother at the Albany swap meet we went to.

Speaking of flying lady tool boxes- I fully cleaned, polished and waxed this proto 9997 top chest. I removed all the stickers and most of the house paint off it and removed the dent in the lid. I straightened a bent drawer and sprayed dry lube on all the slides. I have its older brother and younger brother as well. I got cork drawer liner made by contact at Home Depot and I like how rigid the sheets are. I left the backing paper on.

It is kind of odd. The wrench is thinner than the 30xx series but is thicker than a tappet.

I have wondered about those. I have a plomb/proto catalog with them in it, just never seen any.

I found the 18” extension that was missing from my postwar 5200-A 3/8” drive set. Here it is with some extras. The catalog image is wartime but at least it lists the pieces. I just found the missing 5210 on eBay so the set should be totally complete soon.

Having an original catalog is nice ! I have some downloaded plomb/ proto and an original 1962 proto but no actual original plomb tool catalogs. I like looking through the originals which you can hold in your hand much better than the digital copies
