Your red 3/8 drive box is for the 5200X Plomb "Challenger" set. It is shown in catalog 18A on page 25. Originally held the following: 5212H 3/8, 5214H 7/16, 5216H 1/2, 5218 9/16, 5220 5/8, 5222 11/16, 5224 3/4, 5265 hinge handle, 5266 pin for hinge handle, and the box was 5292.

Regarding your 1/4" set boxes, I don't recall any of the catalogs showing exclusively ignition wrenches in any of those boxes. I think Don is right that some did perhaps hold both sockets and small wrenches.

Edit: I've not found your 3514 single open end in any of the catalogs to which I have access, but AA does show one and refers to it as an Engineer's wrench. The example they show is marked 3542 and is a 1 5/16" size, so they must have had a pretty large selection of sizes since yours is a 7/16". Williams, Billings, Bonney and probably others made similar wrenches.
I saw that Challenger set while looking through the listings. I didn't mention it because I believe that those sets were only offered in '39 and '40 and my original '39 set came in wrinkle finish green. I imagine that some color changes could have taken place since then though.:headscrat
They did list the various boxes without any tools separately.
Here is a link that contains many of the catalogs.

Thanks for the link Don. Has there been previous discussions regarding red vs green box dates of mfg?

Agreed.

Project 2051,
Is that a 3/8-inch drive crow foot attachment I see in the socket tray? On its side? There were a mess of those. 4912 (3/8") through 4944 (1-3/8"). And they also made Phillips 5241 (No.2), 5242 (No.3), and 5244 (No.4) screwdriver attachments to go with that slotted one you have.

Yes 9/16 with an oblong 3/8 drive that allows for a slight swivel. P.W.A marked

wait,....it doesn't look like a Plomb from the side looks like a Bonney PWA. I see you have 3 other PWA sockets. Also what are the markings on the screwdriver attachment?

I posted a timeline once, on this thread, but I don't recall the post number. I'd have to fish around.

EDIT: Found it. Post #4642. Linked here.

Thanks Lugz, I would have searched for it myself, but we left the house right after I posted last and just getting back home. Your notes on the changes back and forth in color from green to red during the time ('39 & '40) Don noted that the Challenger sets were sold explains how Don's 5200Y set and the box Project 2501 shows could be different colors.

A few pages back there was a discussion about the 6523 1/2" drive hex socket and how they were not guaranteed in quality and commonly found cracked. The example I have appears to have made it unscathed although in desperate need of a good cleaning

You can put a ratchet in square hole to turn it. I am guessing it is bent like that to reach around some obstruction

I’ve had them for a while. They were mostly part of an eBay lot I got a while back.
It looks like I have the same 7/16” PWA socket as shown in post 6507.

Not sure I've ever seen a recessed panel electrical wrench like yours.

I have a few. Not sure what the era variant is but they carry the same part number as their non recessed countpart.

Today's find, a pebble 1246 1-7/16" combo with only traces of chrome on a few places, mostly the sides of the open end.

The biggest of the full pebble pattern combo. Nice find. I stuck out this week. But finally warm enough to work in the garage.
Have my extra DOEs and DBEs condensed. If someone is looking for a set filler hit me up.IMG_20190525_171404020.jpeg

It is a relief to find that I only have to find the 1-1/4 and 1-3/8 pebble combos now. I was thinking that they went up to the standard sizes and I would be looking for the larger sizes forever!

Believe it or not, my first pebble was a 1-5/16 combo.

Yes 1-7/16" is the largest. They did have 2 additional sizes in the pebble panels dual marked. I will see if I have either of those sizes as extras.

My list seems to have grown by one today. I was digging around in my 1/2" 54XX set today and can't find my 5480 speeder. I've got to do some more looking in other boxes tomorrow, but now I'm trying to remember if I've ever had one or if I mistook a duplicate WF-40. Its hell getting old!

I have a 5480 that used to be in my wartime set but it was a little too chrome so I replaced it with a plain steel one. Let me know if you can’t find yours.

I checked and you're right Brian. I do have a 1-1/4. I claim senility!

I did find that I need a 1-1/16 as well as the 1-3/8. It never ends.

It's not senility, it's something far worse - and most of us here suffer from it, myself included. It's called TMS. I doubt I'll need to translate for anybody.
