Can anybody comment on this Model 3041 Proto Los Angeles Oddball O/E Wrench? 7/8" x 1-1/16" seems strange. Coupled with nice Chrysler script engraving leads me to beleive it is a special designed assembly line wrench. Welcoming any expertise on the thought.

They are out of the evaporust now, that picture is from yesterday evening.

So i know you are thinking the evaporust didn't work, but when they started the sockets were just pure rust color. I think the evaporust may have reached the saturation point. It is almost completely black with a ton of particulate rust particles in it. May actually try and filter it to see. This is the first time I've used evaporust. Overall i am shocked at the amount of work it has done so far.

Moreag: nice looking bucket of old Plvmb. i'm looking forward to seeing pics of those cleaned up when you have the time. were you having a bit of fun with your friend and trying not to grin too much while picking these up or did you wait until the drive home to show some emotion?

ALL: I picked up an old Proto 3/4 inch ratchet, but not made in Los Angeles so are we posting them here or is there an old Proto thread? I don't know how to age Proto other than I know the ones made in LA are the oldest ones. i'll take pics and post if anybody wants to see it and i probably didn't need another 3/4 inch ratchet, but really what has NEED got to do with it?

cheers

Definitely NOT a catalog size. It goes from 3040 to 3045. That is a very cool engraving, but is it stamped/re-composeable? Or you're suggesting it was done by hand on a few wrenches, onesie twosie at a time, at the plant, by someone with a nice steady hand?

By the way, you see that pair of burn marks on the shank and the one on the flip side in between those two? That is classic. We find a lot of wrenches with those marks. It's where the holders on the electroplating rack, which double as electrodes (drawing the reaction from the solution onto the wrench...), were touching the wrench. Helpful for dating the wrench to no earlier than January 1948. The rack was patented in December 1947.

EDIT: Further reading in a thread on that subject here.

I always filter used solution into a second separate empty container and use that again, sometimes twice, before moving to a fresh amount of solution from the original container. When you use it more you will know immediately when it is no longer working. But yes, it sounds like yours is saturated. If you soak those in fresh Evaporust, it will strip the rust clean, trust me. But it may also start to fade that finish. So check it every 15 minutes or so. I am serious. If that's black oxide, it will eventually strip it too.

Thanks, Private! I appreciate that insight. I think your comments about the elctroplating rack lend itself to my hypothesis that these are Chrysler factory wrenches (I'll assume someone at the factory engraved them for security purposes) My other thought was that they were perhaps specified for mechanics employed at the Chrysler dealerships for certain anticipated maintenance. FYI - This wrench could be YOURS! LOL Listed on Ebay presently. Make an offer. Thanks again, Tom

Hey Tom,
That is actually a common size that would have been a carry over from the Plomb generation. I am not sure if it is odd when it comes to Proto generation stuff. I bet it was one of earlier Proto productions which would put it at early 50s.

Curious why there would be "skip sizing on this"..... I would have assumed that a 7/8" would be paired with either a 15/16" or 1" , rather than 1-1/16" if in fact it was part of a set that they offered.

It is very odd but they did it with a multitude of sizes. Here is a Plomb Size offering in standard DOEs. As you can see there is several points where the sizes are not considered standard pairings.

You nailed it, R Olson. Crushed my dream of a unicorn in the process! On an unrelated note, I picked up a KipperTools rolling toolbox at a yard sale the other day for $50. Apparently these were issued in the military motor pools for Desert Storm et al, and they are chock full of SK. Complete set of SAE & Metric combination wrenches, 4 pcs line wrench set, and complete 3/8" drive socket array. All high polish. A nice find IMHO. If you see what looks like an army green rolling ice chest, it might be worth you taking a closer look! Regards, Tom

Nice swap pics. We are expecting our second snowfall of the season and swaps and auctions will be dormant until about April. Heading into the dark season. Have to sell off some picks fro. This year to raise the tool fund for next year.

Well, it's not Plomb, it's Paschall!

But they made some hammers for Plomb.

Paschal was plombs hammer branding. Part of the original law suit was plomb agreeing not to make hammers with the plomb name on them as plumb was making ball peins then. I can’t remember why they made body hammers marked plomb but I think that may have fed into the next go around in the 40’s. At any rate, fantastic find! I have yet to find one in the wild

I have one as well. I think these are Penens or Fleet as they follow the same part number scheme. It could also be a contact production. I have several 1/2" drive tools that start with an R-**.

I think the agreement was that they wouldn’t make hammers in direct competition with Plumb, which were ball peins and claw hammers. I don’t think that Plumb was making body work hammers. I imagine that Paschal branded hammers would be the same style as the Plumb offerings. I’d like to find one too!
