I think that you better start looking for 1940 3/8” drive tools. In the 1940 catalog, that style box is only shown on the Challenger page. Check out the dates on the tools on my UK buddy’s set. His label was missing but he made a repro from mine.CDB0ACBE-1605-4598-AFD2-908C721F5EC1.jpegC4B9E324-B03C-455B-8190-065F29A9CD0F.jpeg

Great info Don! Thanks for the help! I feel like if your buddy made more labels he could probably sell them to those who need them

Ok I did a little research into the Challenger sets. Not present in the 39' catalogs but present in the '40. I don't have a 41' so I have no clue how long they lasted but you can see a bunch of sets were offered, which I think most of us already knew. I believe it is don who has that amazing logo 3/8 set ?

I think 39 40 tools are ok for those sets. It's interesting that yours is red. Others I have seen have been green.

I was somewhat surprised that my UK buddy’s set was red as well, but it’s hard to argue when looking at the dates on those tools. Plomb wasn’t exactly consistent with their boxes. Some boxes were still marked with round Os way after the markings on the tools and the stickers inside the boxes had changed to PL∇MB. I think they used up whatever boxes they had sitting on their shelves no matter the color.

Yeah the red painted ones are not as common for sure. I agree with the comments above. Plomb was a big fan of the last in/first out inventory control pattern for sure!
Lugz- thanks for the links

OTG- they probably did run out of green paint that day 😂

Thanks! That is a nice set.
Anyone have any 39 or 40 dated tools? Hinge handle or sockets? I will need those to fill this up

I found using gun wipes to be the best way to clean an old tool box
Well, that 9990 sure helps prove your contention! They are soaked with penetrating oils, they are soft, and they won't leave lint behind, that's for sure. Neat idea. I tend to find boxes in a condition that need a little more abrasiveness (0000 steel wool), but again, that beauty sure backs you up and the little metallic fibers left behind by steel wool are a PITA and, like stray hair, have a way of ruining close-up photos, too!

Thanks @Private Lugnutz for the wrenches!
Hey Honza- I got out my spare pebbles. Looks like I have 1 combo wrench you need? The 1218-9/16… Any interest in these does or dbe’s? Some are in better shape than others but I am not looking to make a killing on them. I will post my other spares in another post if anyone is looking for smooth pattern wrenches?

What is tool number 6539?
I dont know what it is or what it does but its extremely important that I acquire one in the immediate future.
You can find it in this catalog.

As to finding one in the immediate future, I have my doubts. Only a couple of veteran collectors have found those after years of searching. I have never run across one.

Here is an old picture of mine on my old tool boards. You can see it next to a 3/4 drive ratchet. I also have the wood handled version as well. I will take a few pictures tonight but basically it is a pry bar with a notch in the tip for work on flat head ford v8 engines. I found it years ago at a swap meet. It’s pretty cool!

Right. You and Roy are the veteran collectors I was referring to. I didn’t name names in case you desired anonymity.

I guess I am a veteran collector now that I think about it. I think of guys like you, Roy, mr x, lugz and others as more veteran than I 😂👍. If I post something on a public forum, I have no problem with someone referencing my post or saying I posted something but I do appreciate the thought and tact!

Here are my 2 valve spring compression tools. Old wood handle and more modern knurling on the handle. Interesting to note the difference in length! Also, I was mistaken on my part number of the long one- 6541…. Old wood handle part#F8. Longer one is almost 24” long

Man you are a hard dude to shop for. I struck out on everything except the 86a! I assume this is going to the house, not the cabin?

Probably not a tool produced for the general public if it ever existed at all.
Here are a couple of new arrivals for the Plomb based GMTK. The 1 lb Paschall ball peen came with a Blue Point handle.945A7E0F-285F-4946-A076-51187A83D8A8.jpeg8508CB5C-160E-427D-ADF7-F1D4E0DE241E.jpeg00EDE1E1-B2B6-4849-8029-848052B86E12.jpeg53105C48-B7E5-4677-8D2C-FD575D9635B6.jpegF34603F8-BAFA-4482-BA66-005089EBC64D.jpeg
