Plotting tool rental to prep floor - buffer vs grinder -

I would like to apply a polyurea coating. I called a local tool rental shop and the grinder is $185/day for the machine, which is an edco sec-1.5L. I would then have to buy the tool to attach to it.

Then I see this from Armorpoxy:

This would attach to a buffer/polisher. What is the difference between adding this to a buffer vs renting a floor grinder? Will a buffer have enough weight? I have no clue and don't want to purchase this pad for this kind of coin and regret it.

Do you have a Home Depot near by? If so, you can rent the floor maintainer (not polisher - RPM's are too fast) and Diamabrush tool for just over $120 for all day. Assuming your concrete is bare and in decent shape, you will want to use the Diamabrush prep tool and not the removal tool.

Call Amorpoxy and ask them, that piece your referencing has a buffer drive and would not work on an Edco grinder. The rental place should have dynaserts that will do the same job for cheaper than that attachment.

Ok, I will stick with the Edco sec 1.5L grinder. Now I just have to find where I can buy the diamond wheel for it.

Edco will do a better job of prep and with more downward weight gives a better profile. Please it has a dust shroud which gets hooked up to a vacuum to keep dust down.

The Diamabrush can be rented per Shea's note above and is often a good alternative to a floor grinder if one is not available locally. The Diamabrush is also a good tool for prepping a coating for a re-coat.

OK. Great. Thank you. Now I just have to figure out which "Dyma-Serts" to use. In the link below, it shows different grades. Talking to Edco, sounds like it would be the 1x general purpose or the 2x medium matrix. Anybody have experience on which Dyma-Serts to use in the grinder? The issue is that the local tool rental will rent the Dyma Serts for $400/day. It seems like I can buy them and the necessary mounts for under $500. I will then have them for the second garage project, which would be later in the year.

Seems like a lot to invest. Many tool rental places will rent the diamond tooling and they charged based on usage/wear.

Shop around some different EQ tool rental places and go with the Edco/Dymasert setup. You should be able to rent the whole setup, grinder, Dymasert tooling with a compatible a HEPA vac for around $600.00 all-in. About the only time I would recommend the floor maintainer route is for small jobs, recoat applications or basement projects where getting the heavier EQ through the house and down the stair presents a real problem.

Also, before you leave the rental yard make sure that the shroud on the grinder is in good working order. It gets a lot of abuse and, more often than not, will be missing altogether. The HEPA dust extraction system is useless without a good shroud.

Also, also,... verify that you have adequate electrical supply for whichever grinder/vac setup you choose BEFORE you rent. Nothing is as frustrating than renting, unloading the big grinder only to have it blow the circuit every time the start up surge hits the panel! This can quickly ruin your day and schedule!

Excellent points. Thanks. My issue is that the tool rental place wants $400 a day to rent the dyma-serts and I can buy them on line for $500 with the holders and wedges that go with them. I have to see what they want for the vacuum attachment. That certainly seems worth it.
