Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have an old shower faucet that I need to replace. This is what I'm dealing with coming thru shower surround. And the parts I have available. What other parts would I need to make this a functional handle and what parts would I need to pick up

I can try and get a better pic but it looks like the outer rube has been cut a bit. Maybe to access the set screw on the top

What is on the other side of the wall? Could you open one or two square feet of Sheetrock and replace the entire valve assembly? Sure, it's a lot of work, but then it would be all new, nothing to worry about for a really long time.

I had a similar problem in my shower and that's how I handled it.

No access On wall behind it. I guess I could cut larger whole on this side to expose valve assembly and cover it with a larger handle plate cover (not sure what they're called) but I'm a bit limited on side with the corner shelf

That's looks like a Moen that has some kind of cheap universal handle adapter on it. To turn the valve on, do you pull the handle out and then left and right for temp control? Can you remove the screw on top of that adapter and pull it off to take another pic so I can confirm?

To change the entire assembly would require a hole way bigger than a plate cover. That's why you'll need access to the other side to change out the valve.
Hopefully you can solve the problem without hacking into a wall or changing out the entire shower enclosure.
(been there...done that...)

Yep that's how it operates

That kind of looks like my shower but there's a bigger access hole where a brass/bronze spring clip is removed to release the core (Moen - replace at Ace Hardware). Judging by the siliconed-up mess someone cut the minimum sized hole and stuck the stem only thru. The trim flange on my shower is better than 6" diameter, it looks like that could not be used due to the proximity to the edge of the enclosure and so you are facing some "mods".

Agreed but if there is no access and you need to change the control valve there isn't much of a choice.

They do sell a repair pieces just for this but some of them look like **** in my opinion. I would rather buy a whole new surround in some cases. My mother's is an older, nice thick fiberglass 3 piece unit and I was able to remove and replace it fairly easily. But it did take some patience.

Before you go destroying it, try to replace just the mixing valve.

Get the set screw out, and try to wiggle the aluminum piece out.
Look around in there, there might be some other retaining clips/springs.

You might need to get a removal tool(the plastic bit seen in the link below). Try following the gist of the link, it's pretty much just:
-Remove retianing clips/screws/whatever
-Wiggle mixing valve and remove
-Take mixing valve to store, find matching size. Size trumps part number, although matching part #s is easiest.
-Reinstall.

If it is a Moen faucet, try giving them a call or email. When you call, you will speak with someone in Ohio, not an off site service company. One of the reasons I try to go with Moen stuff.

Not on any shower valve I've ever changed. They all fit behind the escutcheon.

Tommy

I was referring to the entire piping assembly and not just the cartridge. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my earlier post.
No reason to suspect that the entire assembly needed changing out. I over reacted.

This. The cartridge is a Moen 1222b. Make sure to get the Moen branded one and not the cheapo knockoff made by Danco.

The chrome sleeve has to come out of the wall to remove the horse shoe clip that holds the cartridge in. Most moen faucets have about a 6 to 8" face place to remove. Those parts you have don't look anything like a Moen faucet repair parts. Look up a breakdown and see what I am talking about.

Please keep in mind that the following advice is guaranteed to be worth exactly what you are paying me for it.

For advice you can rely on call Koen Customer Service at 1 (800) 289-6636.

If you can get your hands on a new Moen Tub and Shower Valve from someplace that will allow you to return it if you do not install it, you will be in luck; open the box and examine the parts and read the instructions.

The round Chrome Cover Plates vary.

In addition to ordering a cartridge you will need to know the "Clock Position" of the cover plate attachment screws.

If there are no other options, call a professional plumber and have a new valve and Smitty Plate installed.
