yes i have an american standard shower tub fixture faucet. it is probably around the early 1980's era. it takes the ceramic cartridge as the replacement. for the last three months when you turn the water off it still continues to drip unless i move the lever side to side then sometimes it stops sometimes i have to try it again. my question is how do i know which ceramic cartridge to purchase because i am going to have to order the replacement before i remove the old one? does anyone have any advice on what i can do because i do not want to change out the fixture, as someone suggested!!!! thanks

Shut off water, remove the cartridge and bring to your home improvement center, match up picture , purchase and bring home.
If it is a 2 handle, some have the same model # with a H or C.

i live in a small town and the hardware store does not stock the cartridge. they saiid because of the age, it would have to be ordered. my concern is that if i remove the cartridge to order one and replace with same old cartridge untill part arrives, it may not seal off and run all the time. that is why i was trying to order it and have it on hand to replace all at one time.

Does it have it's own shut offs? If so, shut it off. You may have to wrench on them a little or tighten the packing nut.

Try tightening up the stem with a plumbers bell.

You really cannot do anything with most cartridges. How long will it take to get one? a couple days? Can you go to a bigger town? You now have the cartridge model # so you can get stock levels without driving anywhere.

Have you got a big box store within reasonable distance ?

Lowes seem to be better than HD, for some replacement

items such as you are looking for. Sears Hardware stores

are also on my list of better stocked replacement plumbing

parts places to try. First off, try Googling American Std

Replacement Parts. You may be surprised. Most plumbers

use plumbing specific outlets, most of which specialize by

carrying one or two specific brand names. You may come

up with a few hits that you can phone or E-mail to begin

your search.

Good hunting

Post a picture of the valve. Maybe a plumber here will recognize it.

But most of the time its all but impossible to know what cartridge you will need until you pull the old one out.

American standard will send you one free under the lifetime warranty if you can tell them the model of the valve.

ceramic cartridges are usually lifetime warranty. look up the manuf website for repair parts, identify the model and then call the manuf for the part
