Plumbing Question

I recently put up a large steel garage on my property. A last minute idea got me rethinking the thought of adding a 3" sewer line for sinks only. Since the footing and slab are already poured and a rough in isn't an option, I need help in determining the next best idea. As I see it, I only have two options: 1) open up the fresh slap and install the sewer line as if it wasn't an afterthought and trench under the footing or 2) take a less invasive route by poking a hole in the metal siding by running a horizontal pipe out the siding and then underground. Both options have their disadvantages, but a part of me thinks option 2 is best. What are your thoughts? Any plumbers willing to give some advice?

Rent yourself a core drill and a 5" bit and core down through the slab and footing inside the wall if possible. Then dig down and undermine the footing on the outside, dig your trench and install sewer line. You could also hire a concrete cutting company to core thru the footing. If you rent a rig get a 12" bit extension most core bits drill 13" to 14" if your not thru at that point you need to break the core off remove it and put the extension on to finish the hole. If you hire a company expect to pay $250.00 to $350.00 depending on how far they have to travel to reach you. A 5" hole allows the bell end of the 90 degree coupling to go inside the hole.

Thanks Retroman for the idea. I would consider that option, but the footing is loaded up with rebar. I'm ultimately stuck going underneath the footing which is 2' deep. But poking a hole with a concrete core drill sounds nice vs doing the plum cuts with a circular saw.

Do you really need a 3" for a sink only? A 1.5" going out the side of the building and into the ground wouldn't look that bad...

THIS ABOVE^^^ all you need is an 11/2 line and just run it through the wall. you could case it in with wood and some of the metal siding. this could be done for under 25.00 probably and just a few hours work. it would be a no brainer for me.

I'd take the "no-brainer" approach ^^^^^

Besides, being in AZ probably doesn't put you in a freeze situation that would require some additional forethought.

Yeah I'd just run it outside and away from the foundation. The pipe won't even be noticeable if you paint it the same color as the building.

Thanks BADSIX. I'd go with the 1.5" line if it wasn't for a larger commercial 3-basin sink for washing produce and an eggwasher being hooked up. The volume of water will likely exceed a normal shower so I thought the 3" would suffice. Plus you never know what you'll want to add in the future.

IMO, 3" is overkill. Also, 1.5" is a little small as it is intended to drain a single item. 2" is spec'd in my area for multiple sinks, washers or showers.

That's what I'd use. Plenty big but easier to install and cheaper, especially fittings.

Through the wall is my vote too. When I moved to Glendale for a few years, a couple of things struck me as odd: water lines entering the house above ground and load center on the outside of the walls. And, concrete block fences that weren't cracked. No freezing and frost heaving make some things much easier!

Core drill bits are made of industrial diamonds and will cut rebar. Just a FYI

How big of a waterline will be used to feed the sink and egg washer? I think that would determine the drain size. There is a formula plumbers use to add up fixtures and that determines the size of the drain line.

Something to consider being in the desert. Wherever you run the pipe to will become an oasis, an obvious green patch in a dry barren land. Being in Phoenix you may have more intentional landscaping to run the water line to.

I lived for a time in Southern Arizona where all the houses had what the realtors call South West landscaping, meaning whatever desert vegetation grew there grew there. Running a grey water line down there would have been very obvious.
