Plywood ceiling question

My new shop, Arkansas 30 x 40 stick built shop, has trusses placed 24" on center.

I will use plywood for the ceiling.

My question is, can 3/8 plywood be attached to the trusses or do I need to strip the trusses with 1 x 4s 16" on center?

Thanks,

Steve

PO of my place put thin plywood 'beadboard' on the ceiling of my shop. It was first stripped with 1x4s. I am glad they did as it gave me additional places to hang lights and such.

Instead of buying a bunch of material to use as strips, what would it cost to use thicker plywood? Like maybe 5/8 instead of 3/8, or even 3/4? Sometimes you can get thicker plywood on sale for not all that much more money.

Just be sure to screw the ply to whatever, to prevent pulling out over time. The 1 x 3 or 4 inch furring strips is the way to go, and it's easier to hit with fasteners than anything narrower, that might also sag.

I used 7/16 OSB and there's no sags at all.

3/8 should be fine

Use heavy screws and you wont have to put a floor in the attic LOL :)

When I strapped my garage, I found 2X4's to be cheaper than 1X4's, if you can spare an extra 3/4". I strapped mine because I had lots of insulation on top (added weight).

Why are you using plywood in the first place?
That's going to reflect a lot of noise compared to drywall, I believe.

My trusses are 24" centers and I used 1/2" CDX plywood. No sagging issues. I used 2.5" ring nails in the framing nailer.

I was wondering about the plywood on the ceiling as well. My home garage is 24" OC and its 5/8 drywall. No appreciable sag I can notice. I'm all for build it how you like- but you may need to step up to thicker/ heavier material.

In my experience, 3/8 ply warps like crazy vs 7/16 OSB. Especially if exposed to any moisture. I would not use 3/8 play on 24" OC. I used 7/16 OSB on my 24" OC ceiling, no changes/dips/etc since it was installed in 2011. Also, depending on the time of year and pricing, ply can cost 2-3 times as much as OSB.

I have 5/8 drywall on my garage ceiling, painted white to help reflect the light down. It doesn't sag, is relatively inexpensive, and it is easy to install and/or repair if necessary.
