I am in need of a pneumatic die grinder for my installation of Wilwood disc brakes on my 1972 Dodge Demon. Any suggestions? I found an Astro kit with a straight and angle grinder plus the burrs for $116 on Amazon but I’ve never heard of them before today. I’m open to any suggestions though. I do like the front exhaust of the IR ones I have looked at

I have that exact kit and it works great. The burrs have held up surprisingly well too. At that price point its really hard to beat getting both a straight and angled grinder with burrs for under $120. not to mentioned they have sufficient power so its not like they're just less expensive bc youre getting less oomph.

The IR stuff is great too don't get me wrong. But I've been very impressed with what Astro keeps pumping out and Im slowly expanding my collection of their tools as they continue to shine. Grinders, digital tire inflator, nano 3/8" impact(that thing is badass btw) flashlights etc.

You have no reason to hesitate purchasing stuff from Astro Pneumatic and Im sure I won't be the only one to express that.

I bought some Astro burrs last year and am very impressed with them. And to echo the other comments so far all the items I've bought from Astro have been great.

They're really a top tier air tool brand who just happen to make for a lot of other brands' stuff, so when its under their label its less expensive.

Cool, thanks for the info. That price seemed too good to be true and I was afraid they were a lesser quality tool. I presume they aren’t American made?

Nearly no air tools are USA made save for strictly industrial options like maybe Dotco and Sioux - which are more like $400 die grinders.

Or these if still available. A couple years back some yahoo had these on sale for something along the lines of $30. I truly kick myself in the *** I didn't buy a dozen of them in both straight and angled. These are fantastic grinders. I also own one 90 degree from Astro that rated right up there with these units.

I have a Sioux USA made Snap On and several Astros which are made in Taiwan. I almost always grab the Astros first.

Score.....

So while I was reading the reviews on the black set linked above I saw someone mentioned there was another set (blue) that had front exhaust. Sure enough I read the description on the blue ones and they are front exhaust and sure enough they are cheaper

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I have bought the blue Astro set with front exhaust and the dies at $96 shipped and tax it was too good to pass on.

Here they are my new die grinder kit, they are tiny compared to my “air cut off wheel”

You bought the kit with their micro die grinders, not the standard size. That's why

I’m sure they’ll be fine for what I need

Those are good grinders. I have a right angle micro and a larger straight from Astro, although they aren't blue. Not sure of hp rating but they blow the doors off crappy HF grinders. I'm sure they will be fine for what you need.

They are 1/4HP instead of 1/3, and nothing wrong with them. Just pointing out why they are small.

Good luck with those...
Something wrong with them? That’s a vague statement
Gutless junk.

Apparently you need to carve two little clearance notches, one each on two brackets. You're right. You'll be fine. When/if you get into real rework, you're going to hate those things.

Company I worked for bought "ordinary" CP and IR die grinders for us to use. They sucked. They were all RPM, no torque. The rotary files would stall in the iron castings. And they were horrible with a 3" cutting disc. In fact, they sucked so much that I quit using the company-supplied tools and bought my own--ones with decent torque to go with the RPM.

If you NEED a die grinder, you need MUCH more power. (Or you're grinding plastic.)

What brand and model did you buy?

"1/2 horsepower" Mac. I don't remember the model number. This would have been early-middle 1990s
As it turns out, it's a custom-label job that was actually made by SP Air, as their model 7220. VERY recommended, especially considering the very low (relatively speaking) Amazon price.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002O4WR8S/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I used it professionally (and HARD) for years, and then as a hobby-tool carving cylinder heads, welds, and whatever. I sent it back to Mac for repairs once, (bearing issue) and I put a couple of bearings in it myself. This sounds bad...but in terms of hours of use, I'm ENTIRELY SATISFIED. Far as I know, the vanes are still original. Works great to this day.

Since then, I've picked up some Snap-On competitive models--their PT200 series. I got an extended-shank model off of eBay, and my Snap-On guy gave me three broken ones with various heads (two straight, one angle) that I repaired with varying degrees of success. The extended-shank is wonderfully easy to control. An advantage to the plastic housing is that it doesn't get cold in extended use like the Mac/SP Air. Again, powerful, torquey...it WORKS.

My most-recent purchase was a pawn-shop NAPA extended-shank die grinder. The thing is a monster (I guess) at a full horsepower, but I haven't used it in anger yet.

I found the above kit today on Amazon minus the burrs since they came with my blue bodied mini grinder kit for $67 before tax on Amazon so I ordered them too. I think with these four grinders and the air cut off saw I have I’m set for a minute.
