They cut my cat5 to my barn. I killed him for it though.

Had an electrician come out to give me an estimate on running new cat5 from the house to the barn. about 270ft. He quoted me 2800.00. Seems a bit high to me. What yall think?

Sorry, I should add, what do you get for the $2800? The cat 5 wire is cheap. You are paying for trenching mostly. How many dollars per hour is that? It wouldn't take a day. You can buy 1,000 feet of wire for under $100, plus a few dolars for a crimper and ends.

Ubiquiti …do some research. For ALOT less you can gave wired speed without any trenching.

For cable you can get direct bury cat6 for around $200 if you shop around

Cable+Conduit+Trencher rental should be about $500. The rest is labor, for you or him. At 2800, I would definitely do it myself.

I recently used a TP Link wireless bridge. It was very easy and worked first try.

Yep. Either one will probably work. I have a set of Unifi GigaBeam's connecting the main house to my MIL's house, and they work great. When I build my big shop, I'm moving my office and main rack out there, so I'll probably get one of the Unifi 10Gbit bridge setups.

This ^ right here! If this was in conduit to start with, you wouldn't likely be here with this. If the wire had an issue anyways a fish tape, a bunch of electrical tape and some sweat and you're done. 1/2" will be enough but do yourself a favour and nothing smaller than 1" conduit. Might seem big but any fittings or even sweeping bends will toughen up the pull A LOT! This also leaves some future proofing room. Harry

You can pull your own Cat5. Use the old cable to pull a tape. Then the tape to pull a small bullet, and some more tape. Then that tape to pull the cable. No trench, no conduit, no $2800.

Sounds like it is just buried, not in conduit

The electrician should be able to test and determine how may feet it is to where the cut is and you could just do a repair and seal it, Then replace it at some point.

I paid about the same for water, gas, and 2 conduit runs out to my barn. They had to go down 48" and they hooked everything up.

If he's charging that, I'd at least get him to run conduit for future considerations. Next, I'd run fiber instead of CAT6 cable in the conduit - especially at that distance.

Could be so much worse.

I just moved from wa state where we looked and homes with property south of Olympia. Found out a pocket gopher survey is reqd to get a building permit. Not sure of the details but sounded like they would determine if, where, and on how much of your land you could build. Much like wetlands.

Never even heard of a pocket gopher before.

I don't recommend trying to repair CAT-5, especially in a ground contact situation.
