I just Find it easier to put all my stuff away at the end of the day
But I keep a snap on pocket screwdriver , A 3 watt led pocket sunslet slim, a sharpie, a pen, a thin magnet, and a tread depth gauge and thinking about adding a little utility knife with a clip on it

My Dad does the same thing. Has it in his Dickies shirt pocket. He is a mechanic and I've never seen him even read a book, much less do nerd things. :bounce:

Has a couple pens/pencils, soapstone, sharpies, small flashlight, tire pressure guage, etc.

You need a calculator watch--they scream 'COOL'!

hazard of cell phones its not longer needed, just like the massive slide rule cases that engineers used to wear on their belts in the before time.

I have thought about using a pocket protector so my pockets don't get destroyed by the stuff I carry but I never got around to it.

I don't think it's a bad idea in a shop and the guys that label it geeky are a little confused. The classic "pocket protector geek" was the 1950's or 1960's engineer who wore one with his short sleeved white dress shirt at his job at GE or Chrysler or wherever.

Once you get into a shop or factory environment and not in dress clothes in an office I think all kinds of things become "OK"...pocket protectors, knife and flashlight holsters, etc.

I'm not flaming anyone - to each thier own, this is just my thoughts.....Maybe it's different in different shops, but working on machinery I figured out very early on that I can't carry junk in ANY pockets while I work. The only exception being a pen (cause ya allways gotta write stuff) , and that I make sure the office orders me the skinny kind with a good clip..... I squeeze into tight spots where even that'll snag or else it all falls out when I'm hanging upside down to reach something down in the middle of the frame somwhere.....I think it took me 3 years to train my helper to empty his pockets each morning or else the **** ends up on the floor....Besides, I usualy have the tool cart nearby where I have my clip board with notes / parts drawings, measuring tape, sharpie, soapstone and all that on it.... I've seen some of the older guys (mechanics from other companies coming to us for parts) with pocket protectors full of stuff and wondered if they are really working on the same stuff???
And as for actually protecting the pocket....well, it's a work uniform....in my case, it'll be torn and burned with weld spatter long before you wear out that pocket with junk.....

I don't even have a pocket protector, I catch hell just for carrying a sharpie or pen in my pocket. I also have tool cart where most of my "important" stuff is stored, as I too am lucky to have any pockets still attached at the end of some days.

I've said it before, only dorks wear a plastic pocket protector. Right up until the time you stick a carbide tipped scriber into your ******. :shocking:

I carry a extension magnet, sunlight slim jr, sharpie, pen, earplugs, and a small notepad. During the summer I use a pocket protector to keep sweat from soaking the notepad. Also the pocket protector makes it fast to pull the junk out of my pocket when I climb and crawl through machines.
My sunlight slim jr. penlight is the most used of all the things that I carry and If anyone knows of anything better please let me know.
The other mechanics at the place I work kinda made fun of the junk in my pocket at first. Now they all carry the slim jr. and are starting to carry the magnet.

Why not get a fanny pack?

That would steer you from geek to nerd

Do you have the matching horned rim safety glasses with the mesh side wings?

Steve
Yes I do. Two pairs, along with a number of more modern glasses with clear side shields, some wrap around models, several goggles, and one face shield.

I have a dozen or more pocket protectors in my basement desk drawer. There is also a good full size Pickett slide rule in a nice leather hardcase with beltloop and an old SR-10 calculator in a belt case in the same desk drawer. The drawer below it has decks of IBM punchcards with Fortran programs on them along with a number of rolls of paper tape.

They also call me SIR Dirty Nerd for my expertise with a .44 magnum.

Back in the day I would have had a double ended mech pencil with red and blue lead, at least 3 Pentels 3/5/7, an eraser holder, steel rule or two, screwdriver w/ magnet, and a double ended screwdriver. Sometimes the screwdriver with magnet was replaced with a TC scribe or I would have an Exacto knife. I didn't need a notebook because there was paper everywhere to write on.

The slide rule stayed at the desk since everyone had one or one of the newfangled calculators.

Many years ago when I worked in a TV Repair Shop, we all carried pocket protectors because it was easy to remove at the end of the day. I can't see how an iPhone would replace two screwdriver, and three hex nutdrivers and a pen? I guess I could have used the iPhone as a wedge to hold a door open when we were moving the old 300# consoles out of someones house to make a repair. I must admit they did and do look prety geeky.

In years past you would have a pack of Camels or Luckys in your shirts pocket. I laughed at the HBO series Pacific when the Marines were griping that only the officers got Luckys while they were stuck with Raleighs.

Just a pen in my shirt pocket, no protector. And a coin PURSE in my right front pants pocket! Flame away, but I'm not picking change up off the floor of my car anymore...

How about one of these? A Rear Guard, made by Bucket Boss. It fits in your back pocket.

I sell pocket protectors. Well, I use to sell pocket protectors. I'll bet I haven't done an order for 10+ years. But, I use to sell a lot of them (with custom imprints).

The main reason you don't see them as much anymore is simply the quality of the pens available now. It's a lot more rare to have a pen leak now than in the past.

But yeah, all of my factory clients did them - it was an automatic order when you started working with a factory.

At KSC - we called the guys with pocket protectors - "Poindexter's".

When they went to the ******* - they used the seat protectors (aka ***-gasket) as well. You'd hear the paper rustling as they wiggled around - trying to get that seal "just right". Then, we called them "nesters".
