Hopefully you will be "paid" for your services in BEER!!!

He did mention liquid payment was inbound. To be honest money would have been good as I destroyed a carbide drill bit on the stainless pots. The stainless is made of mystery metals and workhardens instantly so I needed to use carbide to get through.

I never really know what work will come through the door since my only criteria is the dimensions of the work, not the type. If it fits the machines and the workbench, I do it. I have another project lined up to machine some items for a stabilized video camera, ir spotlight and thermal camera unit.

Sorry for the slow response. I have made a short video where I cover heating, wifi and a few other details. I have posted this project on other forums so I figured I'd cover the topics with a video since it's probably a little more interesting.

Excellent thread! I have 2x 40 footers and have aspirations of putting them to other uses. When you move next, your workshop may very well be the easiest move ever :)

I have noticed the dental air supply at our dentist is very quiet. What is it about them that is done to quiet their operation? I assumed it was some kind of scroll compressor..

just a doodle I was messing with, ideas for a rural property, the containers would be (relatively) secure storage and serve as the long walls of a pole barn sort of structure.

Great small workshop and good use of space. Positioning the machines that need a lot of infeed or outfeed room by the doors is key, too.

What are you using to secure the container? I would think a good puck lock would be in order.

For folks looking for ideas and tips for a good compact workspace I suggest taking a look at the YouTube vids of Ron Paulk. He's a finish carpenter / master builder who's done a great deal of work in designing portable work stations as well as mobile workshops built inside things like large delivery trucks and medium-sized towable trailers. his 'mobile workshop' truck and trailer have a great deal of features fit in small spaces.

I use 2 of these:

They are pretty tough. To be honest, most theives are looking for electronics and stuff they can hock quickly. What I have is a little too specialized and heavy. I also have good neighbors who keep an eye on things and from the road, my shop just looks like a regular container so it attracts no extra attention.

I never heard of Ron Paulk before and checked his videos out. Very impressive. I am still suprised that containers as workshops have not caught more attention. Mine has been an excellent solution and I have a steady stream of people coming to have work done who are shocked at the space and functionality. For a 1 man shop, it's an excellent solution.

Link is not working.

Fixed! Thanks for the heads up. I tried to embed it but couldn't for some strange reason. My voice was on the verge of failing when I shot the video and today I have lost it completely. Anyway, I hope you find it interesting.

Thanks for posting the video :) Your last statement in the clip questions "low" interest in the shop. I suspect that's because most of us are looking for more space..not less. A container also has the outward aesthetic challenges that would make it a tough solution for many neighborhoods.

Those things said, I love your shop, and its efficient use of space. Like the cabin of a smaller cruising sailboat, every square inch is considered. I've tried to treat my own space just the same. What seems to gather most interest online is the use of shipping containers as building components of larger structures, however, I'm seeing more and more coverage of small spaces in shows like "Tiny House, Big Living", and "George Clarkes Amazing Spaces". I think you should submit your shop to them :)

You are right regarding the outside appearance of the shop. Most people wouldn't consider this solution because of the aesthetic and space related challenges. People are always shocked when they step inside and see that the work space is functional and quite comfortable. I may take you up on the idea of submitting the workshop to a tv show. We featured on House Hunters International once and it was a nice keepsake for when the kids are older.

Great space, can't believe how many machines you fit in there!

Thanks Justin. I had to sell off a few machines from my old workshop in order to get everything into the container in a useable manner. I didn't just want machines in the shop, but the right machines that are small industrial and have the correct features for a well specc'd prototyping workshop. Since moving things around in the shop is such a challenge, I needed to make sure that every machine was a"keeper".

Just wondering if you finished the over head cairn/lift system? rngr1

Unfortunately not. A nasty prolapse has slowed me down a bit. I may also be moving the container to a different location as I am starting my own engineering / design / prototyping business and need access to manual machines until I have a full CNC setup available.

I will be completing the crane in the spring or summer though. I have made some more small improvements to the container so I really need to make some updates. Kick starting a business sure eats a lot of time so I have been a little slack in updating.

Like GB said - I've been watching and admiring as well.

But which of the House Hunters did you feature in - we've just started getting that show on a new channel here. :dunno:

Down on the bottom side of the globe.

It was "Navigating Kongsberg, Norway". Since then we have sold the house, and just in time since we beat the huge slump in the oil price.

Greetings from a fellow Norwegian! I saw the first picture in this thread and thought "hey, that looks like home" and sure enough. Where in Norway are you located?

I love the way you have organised your shop. It really makes me wonder why I run out of space when I have a 70 m^2 garage.

Thanks! I'm in Kongsberg. I have just started renting a 220 m garage where I will move a few of those machines. I will be exercising the same care and attention when setting it up. This was a great exercise in planning.

Wow!

Enough said. Proof that size doesn't matter but common sense, great planning and discipline in maintaining your space pays huge dividends. :rocker:

Updated pictures this weekend. I had to repair the ceiling in the container as the ceiling battons were not thick enough to hold the screws holding the plywood in the ceiling. I have been very busy in my engineering business but have done a few projects for friends and made a couple breweries for friends as well. Anyway, I'll take some snaps this weekend and update.

In-Cred-A-Bill... I cant believe how impressive your Shop is. Im definitely going to be heading over to your blog for more...

Great Work. We have a saying in my part of the planet: "A Boer Maak a Plan" it came from back in the day when any situation required out of the Box thinking to fix or solve a problem without the correct tools resources or skills - Basically - A Farmer Makes a Plan - Though it doesn't Necessarily apply to farmers directly, I think we can add Australians living in Norway on the list too...

Thanks! I did a short update video 18 months on about how everything has stood the test of time and our freezing winters. Enjoy!

OK folks, until I find a solution for the down pictures here is an additional video on the storage:

This weekend I will be getting an isolating transformer which will allow true 3 phase in the shop. This means I can finally get my mill operational.
