Different point of view below.
Digital point and shoot cameras have a lot of new models with new features always being introduced, rendering last month's model obsolete. Instead of playing that game, I bought a $55 shipped Casio Exilim EX-Z16, 12.1 megapixel camera a couple of years ago. Quite basic functions with a few advanced features buried below the "best shot" automatic mode. Cheap, simple to use, hasn't broken yet.

Food for thought- If your current phone doesn't have a decent camera there's a good chance your next one will. I have a Samsung Gallaxy III and haven't used my Canon point and shoot since I got the phone. Dropbox makes the pics instantly available on all my devices, it's the best "tool" I've acquired in the last year.

I have a s3, and while the camera is ok. It lack any real zooming ability and for indoor low light shooting, it is lacking. Either it will flash wash the photo, or you get a very nosey photo shooting at high iso. And with the digital zoom the image quality degrades very quickly as well. My cheap olympus pns still takes much better photos then my iPhone 4s or my samsung s3 especially when zooming, it has an optical zoom which gives much better results.

We have a couple cameras, but like Mohawk, we also have CoolPix. If we go anywhere that is the goto camera to have. It slips into the side pocket of the wifes purse, or I can carry it in a shirt pocket. It takes great pics, the menu buttons are simple to use. At the time I think I paid $99 for it, but I think they are a little cheaper now. I recommend one. For the money, if you get a higher end camera, as cheap as a CoolPix is, it's worth getting one of those too, and carry it in the car with you.
