S I currently have a 30x40 Wick pole barn that I us primarily for my automotive hobby and I have a lift roughly in the center. I wanted to add a 40x18 enclosed lean too addition on the right side(see overhead pic) for a paint booth/storage. I had plans drawn up from Wick to do so and was quoting concrete when the county building inspector threw me a curve ball. Basically I cannot build on the right side as I will no have the required 50' from my property line once the addition is completed. Building it on the other side would require me to fill in 3' and level and move a mini-split, both of which were not in the original plan financially. I presume I can add on to the front of the building and lengthen it as I have the space that way and I could move the garage doors to the right side of the building? But it is kinda goofy design unless as I will have 3 doors and a long end(original building) that will make it difficult to move cars in as I would have to drive in and turn right. Looking for some ideas n how to to what looks like the easiest way to add to my building based on property restrictions and have a functional space.

How wide could you go and still stay within the setback requirement?
Could you step the addition?
Apply for a variance?

We really need to see it on a plot map to offer suggestions.

No answer but I sure wouldn't want to move door to side. I think even with fill easier to put on left.

Do they have to be level with each other? Is a separate building in anyway possible, to minimize earth work and perhaps not have to move minisplit? I just fear the unknown costs of modifying existing work.

I'd say the easiest option is to add a lean-to on the west side - even with relocating the AC and adding fill.. You have a set-back issue on the east side and unless you can get the width down to make it fit, that's a no-go.

It doesn't look like your site/cul de sac is all jammed with with neighbors, if you're talking 5-10 feet short of the required 50' would a variance from the jurisdiction be reasonable to apply for?
