Pole Barn Build Question???

Hello everyone, I am starting building my pole barn garage. First build of that kind ever. So, with first build comes first questions. Also please feel free to give me any pointers that helped you with your build.
First question(s):
1). How deep and wide of a hole should I dig for my 6"x6" post???
2). 2 or 3 bags of concrete on the bottom of the hole???
3). After posts are installed should I fill them with concrete or dirt???

Have to ckeck with code enforcer on these questions. Around here in My area min is 41in. We used a 18 inch auger for holes for 6x6. One bag of concrete dry on bottom and backfill with dirt only.

Depending on the area, some do it with dry, others will put a concrete plug in the bottom, some put nothing more than stone in the bottom and fill with stone around the post. Others backfill with dirt tamped down. No concrete around the post.

In the Gallery, someone is building a new pole barn and they are using laminated post instead of 6x6 post.

Best bet...find either someone close to you that has had one built to code, or look into talking with a building inspector to see what is required.

What is required here on GJ is pictures of your build and lots of them :lol::thumbup:

I went to 48" in depth. Code for my area, Iowa, was 40" min. I used a 12" diameter post hole digger and then cleaned out with the old hand held unit. I put 2x6x12 up-lift block about 10 " off the bottom of my laminated (3)-2x6 post for uplift support and then dumped in bagged concrete dry, part way, applied some water, then filled the remainder of the hole with concrete and then more water. Done deal. Local codes will prevail.

My 30x60 by 14' ceiling was so tall it required engineering. The engineer required 30" diameter by 4 foot deep holes. 8" of concrete below the post and then 100% concrete backfill. Each post hole had a 6 foot stick of rebar embedded 2' into it vertically and then bent down so that 4' of that bar was poured into the floor slab. Poles were true 6x8 #1 doug fir.

I am in a "high wind area" 115 mph wind load but very low snow load. My biggest problem was overcoming the wind load on the side of the building.

Pole spacing is 12'. So maybe you could lighten up on the footings if you cut that down to 8'.

My 36x56x14h had a laminated 8x6 every 8 foot. Get the laminated ones if you can they were the same price but much, stronger,straighter, and less prone to rot. I dug a 24in diameter hole 4ft 10in deep, i mixed the quick crete by hand and poured a 10in footer in each hole. I also hand set 2 pieces of rebar in the wet crete. DONT SURROUND THE POST WITH CONCRETE, that will speed up the rot ten fold. Once you let the crete dry, drop in your post, then level it, then tamp CHAT/ Minus around the pole. Be careful tamping since you can move the post a in or so if you tamp on one side too much, so spread it out. Leave the chat 6in low of grade, fill the hole with water and move on to the next hole. When you are done with all holes re tamp and add the last 6in of chat. I have my build bellow, check it out it may answer some questions.
