I'm trying to get quotes on having the ceiling of my shop spray foamed. I've talked to two guys so far and both have differing recommendations. Shop is a 30x40 pole barn and the walls have been insulated already with batts. Roof is 4/12 and gable ends would be sprayed.

First option is 3" of closed cell. 6k

Second options is 3" of open cell. 6k

I'm reading that it should be twice that or more of open cell and around twice for closed. The price seems high because I would not spray foam the entire shop at that rate...

Those that have had it done, what are your thoughts? What did you use and how thick? Thanks

30x60x14. 3” closed cell roof, 2” walls. $10,600 for everything. But this was just before prices went apesh*t, October 2020. And I’m in Texas.

Totally worth it.

Open cell is usually priced lower per inch than closed cell. Comparing those two options, I would take the closed cell every time.

Closed cell has about 2x the R value of open cell. I've NEVER seen them priced the same as the material cost is substantially different. Something seems off in these bids...

Both are great products and you're doing exactly what I'd do - spray the roof deck and bat the walls.

I'm cheap, so I had 1" of closed cell sprayed on the roof of my 20x30 and the difference is incredible. I can now actually be inside with just a fan circulating when the sun is out! I'm doing foam board the the walls. Cost was $1,200 and I am in Missouri.

I got two more quotes for open cell at 5" on the roof deck and 3" on the gables.

One was 4.5k and the other was 7k...

The latter would have been competitive but they are charging me 1600 for a man lift rental. One of the first quotes charged 500 for man lift rental.

Sadly the 4.5k quote did not come out and do an appraisal, so I have a suspicion they will want to stop out to make sure the quote is accurate. I wont be surprised if I'm upcharged to cover my finished walls or they forgot to quote me on removing the bubble wrap. We shall see...

Do you have any issues with condensation on 1 inch of foam?
