I am planning on adding a concrete floor to an existing 32' x 24' unheated pole barn in lower Michigan. The structure is divided half & half with horse stalls and an open 12' x 32' area where the concrete will be added. There are numerous ground hog holes throughout the dirt floor. The new concrete area will be a storage area for lawn & garden equipment and a car that weighs slightly less than 3,500 Lb. No plans for any heavy equipment or a lift.
I will be calling a contractor for an estimate, but would like to gather information and opinions first.
So what to do about ground hogs? should I consider a rat wall or will one be required? What grade of concrete? How thick? Pour directly over dirt? Gravel? Sand? Use a vapor barrier? Reinforcing? Anything else I've left out? Thanks in advance!

There's smoke bombs designed to get them. Plug up the holes you can find and be ready to plug few you didn't know about. Throw some lit ones down the hole. Either they leave, which you hope they don't because they can't. Then they die, all of them. Fill holes and hope they don't come back.

From my experience the only thing that can cut down the number of groundhogs is a .22Mag! You will never get rid of them. I know, I've shot well over a 100. About 15 years ago my neighbor & I shot over 50 two years in a row.
