Pole Barn Concrete Specs

Hi all,

I'm ready to start planning for concrete for my pole barn. As expected I have some questions...this time it's about the concrete specs.

Background info:

30x40x12 pole barn
Live in upstate NY
Plan to heat the garage
Will be running pex in floor
Will eventually have a lift

My questions are:

Is it necessary for the concrete slab edges to be thicker? Like an Alaskan slab? If so, how deep?

For an insulated floor, I assume you continue the foam board down the deeper sections of the "footer"?

How thick a layer of crushed stone do you need as a base?

I won't be able answer all your questions but I will offer up some advice.

Check with your town/village/city building department as they may have codes you must follow as far as what type of slab you must have.

You really should have some plans, building dept might reuire stamped plans based upon your size of your barn.

If you are running pex in the flooring you might want to have this all drawn out as well, especially if you are putting in a lift, you don't want the lines running were you might need to drill for the posts of your lift.

On my slab, i used over 6 inches of crushed stone.

My slab was 18x24 and the perimeter was 18 inches thick.

All these things might be different based upon the codes on where you are living.

No need for a thicker edge.

Casmurbax,

The town doesn't require any permits or special conditions to pour the slab. He just suggests going at least 4", which I already planned on. On a side note, I know where Wilton is...I'm down in the Albany area.

Lots of good reading material there...I guess what it all comes down to is a good compacted base. Which is generally what everyone has agreed on.

My buddy basically put a bug my ear about having to make it an Alaskan slab otherwise it would be worthless....as I'm sure everyone who's poured concrete in their garages here, we all want the best and most crack free pad we can get, at the most reasonable price possible.
