is there anything wrong with building a pole barn in a sandy area? ive heard all sorts of opinions from local builders and there all different. some say use a cement plug, some say don't worry about it, one suggested trenching for the poles and set the poles on a 4x6. what do you guys think?

not exactly sandy soil but a clay and sand mix around here.

on my barn we did 6x6 post, 18" hole, 2 bags of reddy mix cement mixed up soupy in a wheel barrow, if you make the cement soupy it will self level real nice in the bottom of the hole........the holes were 42-48" deep

seemed to work good allthough its not quite been a year yet........I'll let you know in 20years............lol

My base was like sugar. I had no problems. The county required a third of the pole in the ground and sitting on a concrete footer, which was the requirement regardless of soil type. A 3-4 foot diameter auger on a Bobcat skid loader dug the holes. They were then filled with about two feet of concrete. A band board went around the outside of the poles which serves as a form for the slab. No tamping was done but the soil was scraped off the top. There was no fill.

When I lived in FL I built 2 pole barns. One I set the poles on a solid concrete block the other just packed gravel. Both were backfilled with gravel and packed down. Both pole barns are still standing despite numerous hurricanes etc. BTW I had skirt boards on both, one had a poured concrete floor the other had a crushed concrete floor. YMMV.
