Hi all,
Im going to be building a 30 x 40 x 10 pole barn in the very near future. I've been offered vinyl over fiberglass or double bubble insulation. I've researched a lot and still don't really have my answers. So I graciously come to you for possible answers. The shop will be used to store a couple larger items, but mainly be a mechanic and fab shop. I will be heating and cooling it down the road. I really don't want to do extra framing and insulating and covering. The insulation is a $1900 upgrade and I'm not sure it it's worth it up front for what it is. Or if I should have it built and then use that money for a better setup. So whatcha got for me?

I would skip that thin layer if you plan on heating the building. That thing stuff may prevent condensation issues but won't be enough to save you money heating. Then it is a problem when you want to insulate it for real since the original insulation will be a vapor barrier and as you know, the VB is supposed to be on the warm side.

Build it bare and do it right when you are able.

So no double bubble!!! My real fear with building it bare first is trying to explain to the wife that I need to spend more money to insulate the barn when it could have been done while being built. She only know insulation is insulation, not differences. How far is $2000 going to get me when I frame insulate and cover? I haven't figured it up yet, but I'm thinking not far!

I have the vinyl covered 2" fiberglass in my shop. Like you I intended to insulate better but the old shop is going on 25 years old and I never got a roundtuit. The new shop is the same. I can say that I have no condensation in either shop. If you do have hard plans to super insulate then take highbeams suggestion. If your like me and never get it done then go with the lighter insulated vapor barrier like I have. You could always peal the vinyl off or slit it to remove the vapor barrier abilities. As mine is a hobby shop I have the ability to stay out of it in extreme temperatures and can afford some inefficiencies on the days that I heat.

The shop is going to be a hobby shop and I understand about extreme temps. I plan on heating with a heatpump, and not sure what backup I will use. I don't have NG and propane can get expensive. I do marine repair on the side so there are times I need to be out working in the cold. I'm just trying to do this once and actually feel good about my decision. Thanks to everyone who has replied. I guess I need to figure how much it will cost to fram a ceiling and walls, insulate, and then cover. I just don't want to do the extra work.

Well after doing some figuring, it looks like $2700 for Framing of walls and ceiling, R19 walls, r36 blown in attic, and 1/2" OSB to cover all. I hate to lose the overhead room, but this is looking pretty good.

I'm in the same boat(thats what I call my shop),its even the same size.I'm buying 8' wide rolls of fiberglass from Morton buildings. Its about $600 for the all the walls.Horizontal purlins every two feet.Vapor barrier on walls and ceiling.Metal liner panels on walls and ceiling.Blown in on ceiling.I think this is a pretty standard way of doing it.Morton does it this was as well as many here on the board.Minimal framing, lots of insulation.

I,m going to be talking to Morton tomorrow so i will ask them about their insulation options.

$2700 is just the materials, I will be doing all the work. $1700 just for R19 WOW, i looked it up on homedepots website so it may be different if i was at the store. I'm going to ask about the tresses for a ceiling.
