Pole barn insulation & interior finishing

Hello all,

I'm about to have a 30x40x12 enclosed pole barn built (glad to see this is such a popular size in these forums, too!) and am planning to have closed cell spray foam insulation installed. By code I don't need a thermal barrier over the insulation, but am considering adding OSB on the interior just for a cleaner "look".

For those who've insulated their barns, with spray foam especially, did you see a need for any kind of interior paneling, or are the exposed joists just fine?

I know having the exposed joists will make it much easier to just hang stuff, but am mildly worried about sparks (grinder, welder) and other damage (teenager recklessly parking a four wheeler, me recklessly parking a tractor) to the foam. This will be an important player for my electrician so he knows if junction boxes need to be spaced for OSB or not.

Thanks!

Get a scrap chunk of the foam you will be using and do your best to light it w your propane torch.

You will see yourself and have your answer.

I chose to plywood my walls, but not for fire reasons, but for hanging stuff reasons.

We have Open cell.

Finishing up a 25x35x12' pole barn now and not only did I close my foam insulation in, I also studded out the walls for hanging shelves and other stuff down the road.

This is what I did too. My 6x6 posts were 10 feet apart and I framed between them and hung 7/16 OSB.

I've got to have engineered plans for my building (for hurricane/wind mitigation) and my design has 2x6 studs on 24" centers all around, so no need to frame in for me.

I am finishing up a garage build on a pole barn the same dimensions as the OP. I studded walls, Osb then Hardie outside, inside is 24 GA. galvanized the bottom 4 ` & cheap paneling above. I did Osb in my fab shop, not a smooth surface even after paint & it ***** up the paint

For my money and the neat appearance and functionality. you can't beat white pegboard screwed right to the studs or lathed out from the osb. You can can the world on pegboard and have the light reflectivity as a bonus. Both my shop (my avatar 60 x 40) and our barn are completely covered in white pegboard.
