Hello,

Thanks to this forum I am 80% into my new pole barn garage here in MD. And I've decided it needs a loft for storage. I've read all the posts I could find here and a bunch of Googled charts on loft/deck stress, and here is what I've come up with.

Loft01.png

Rough example but it'll help visualize. 24' wide 8' deep. I'm thinking 2x 2X10 across the front X2 with a notched 6X6 post in the middle. Both ends bolted to the 4X6 pole barn support with a 4X4 under it for extra support (yes there will be a cement floor in a few days). 2x 2X10 in back X3, also on 4X4s. with 2X8 joists on 16in centers. My guess is the storage will be 1000 to 1500 lbs of ****. No people since it's only got 4 foot clearance up there.
Now my armature online soothing says I could go double 2X8's in front / back with 2 X 6 joists.

Thoughts?

2x8 would be plenty on back and floor joists since back is only spanning 8' & joists @ 16". Skip the posts under the back/front corners as it's not necessary. Lag to existing posts. Same height front/back all the way around. Hanger front and rear. Hanger at 5.5ish" down on front. Front a 2x10 would suffice if your not putting super heavy stuff up there but 2x12 is better. Double 2x8's ok too. Only a center post is necessary but if your worried about it i'd nail/lag on a 2x6 underneeth like they do on pole building posts under the truss.
