Pole Barn Move!?!

Back story.... we recently purchased a home that has a 24x24 pole barn on it. Nice little barn in a horrible location on the property. I am considering moving this barn to a new spot. I have a slope on that would allow me to have put in a build a bank barn type foundation, walkout basement and would then move the shop to set on top of this. Current plan is block wall foundation on proper footings and setting J hook anchors into the top course of block which I would then fab angle iron brackets to bolt to sides of the cut off 4x6 posts. To support the new floor I am planning on using simpson strong tie HGUM7.25 joist hangers to hold a double 11 1/4" LVL beam down the middle with 2x12 joists spaced every 12" attached to outer wall and side of beam.

My questions are:

1. Should I attach a ledger board to outside walls or simply attach joist hangers right to the block for my joists?

2. What should I use for flooring? T&G plywood or ?

3. Am I crazy?

I hope this makes sense, thanks in advance.

That sounds like an ambitious project. I don't have any useful advice for you but I'd sure like to see a thread detailing step by step how you do it.

Just about anything can be done if enough thought is put into it, so no, I don't think you're crazy.

The fundamental problem is that a pole construction building won’t work set on a footer. The poles in the ground provide the lateral bracing that comes from sheathing or diagonal bracing in conventional construction.

I’m not a structural engineer, but I suspect the plywood nailed to widely spaced posts isn’t enough.

I currently have an amish crew lined up to do the actual moving.

Captain Spaulding: I agree that the lateral bracing is a concern. Midwest column makes a bracket for attaching 4x6 posts to a concrete footer. The barn is plywood sheathed and I would have no issue with adding bracing on the interior. Any suggestions for that?

It’s do able. Here is mine. Welded I beams to the trailer. Then bolted the main poles to the I beams. Worked great. b0defbee5fcf901313e8dd7693c15949.jpg

I've read this multiple times about pole buildings, however there are many that are built with posts only on concrete - my 30 x 40 included. It's been standing for over 25 years with no problems. The metal sheathing provides a fairly substantial membrane once it's all fastened.

In the OP's case the plywood sheathing should be all that's needed. I'm not a structural engineer either, just relaying what I've seen succeed in the real world.
