I am in the beginning phases of researching the 16' x 12' shed I will be building this summer. This would be for mower/garden supplies type of storage. I am considering going with a pole barn style of build, with board and batton exterior, for several reasons. In addition to my research, I always like to get opinions here too.

Floor
My thought on how to do the floor is.. 4" x 4" poles set at 4 feet intervals around the permiter of the structure, run a 2"x10" board around the permiter (I guess this would be called the "rim joist"), and then span between the opposing rim joists in the narrower direction at 16" OC with more 2x10's, top with subfloor material. This is basically like building a deck.

Is this about right?

Roof
For the roof, I would attach 2x8's to the side poles at my desired roof pitch, attach a front and back facia board, and then span between facia boards with my remaining 2x8 rafters. Tie into poles wherever a pole is present. Cut off the tops of the poles that extend past my roof. Deck and shingle.

About right?

Walls
Run high, middle, low 2x4 around the entire structure. Screw siding board (rough cut cedar I think) into the 2x4's. Tack battons into the boards.

About right?

I should have passed this on before to others. On the 8x10 that my step-dad built years ago, he put down some stone for drainage. On top of the stone, he laid some RR ties, then bulit the walls on top of them. He used some angle iron in the corners (on top of the rr ties) to lag the ties together and to lag the walls too. Once it was done, he put stone in the "RR tie" foundation. He built it in '80, give or take a year, and the ties are still decent shape.

I would suggest that when you frame the walls you mount the horizontal boards inside the 2x4 posts rather than attach them to the outside face. Positives are that you are framing both the inside and outside walls at the same time, and it also makes a stronger structure.
