I am getting ready to build a building for my workshop-storage. I am debating between a pole style building with metal siding and roof or an all metal building. Is there a big difference in cost? Does one last longer than the other? Are there any reasons to choose one over the other? The building will be about 40X80 with a conctrete floor with a couple large doors. Another cosideration is that I have the skills to probably build either one myself although I have never built a metal building I have done a lot of traditional framed structures. I will probably have the building built as opposed to doing it myself due to time issues. Any input would be appreciatted.

The pole building is cheaper to build. It dosn't require a foundation like the red iron building will. The red iron building is going to last a lot longer, but in the terms of your life either will probably out last you.

The red iron building is non flamable, will not rot, and is not effected by insects.

you can see how not to build one in my link below:)

WOW! I just looked at the thread about your building, that is an impressive project. Would a all steel building be easier to build than a pole building? I have done a lot of research and pricing on steel buildings but I can't get much info on pole buildings. It seems I can get a pole building built for about the cost of a steel building kit.

Here is a link to my 60x60 aircraft hangar construction project. There is just one of me, so I hired it done. This is my "shop" such as it is.

I could have done a pole building, we have several where I live, and several metal buildings like mine. I was just impressed with the metal building. I watched a couple of the pole structures being erected and I didn't care for putting poles in the ground (unless they are cresote covered telephone poles, we do have one hangar done with those) I'm in the south, thats spelled TERMITES, the all metal structure has distinct advantages. Mine is not perfect and I wished I had known more about metal building construction before the work began. I could have spotted the mistakes while they were still fixable.

I have talked to a contractor of steel buildings who just built a building for my neighbor. It is all metal but it is not red iron. It is framed out with metal studs and metal trusses. He said he can go up to 45' wide and 12' high with this system. It doesn't strike me as as strong or durable structure as a red iron building. He claims that it is, and it is slightly less expensive than red iron. I am not familiar with this type of building but he says most of the buildings he builds are this style. Is anybody familiar with this type of construction?
