Which is better, and why? Pros and cons of each. I talked to a guy today who builds both and said in my area pole barns are not that much cheaper than a stick built garage. Can get a little more sqft for the money doing a pole barn. So I really don't know what I want to do.

Depends what your use is, finishing the interior, are you capable of doing part of it yourself ? Are they assessed the same on your property taxes ?

Well if you don't know what to do then with the scant information you give us how can we make a decision for you?

You need to define the uses of your building, parking cars, fixing cars, wood working, storing farm implements, storage, or a party place to impress your friends. Is it to be heated and Air conditioned, plumbing, full computer and entertainment system infrastructure. What is your budget?

Give the members good information and you'll stand a chance of getting a few good answers. Stick with no detailed information and what you get will be next to worthless to you.

BTW a pole building is a type of CONSTRUCTION whereas a garage is a type building. A pole building can be a garage..

Useage.... storeage of my 73 Ford Bronco, lawn equipment. My hobby vinyl decal business. Cooled some way, not really sure, heated yes. Doesn't have to be a show place, main person in there will be me. Doing general maintenance on Bronco and lawn equipment. My tools such as table, miter saw, drill press, tool box will be in there. Budget of around 30k all in. Built my 24x32 garage, drywall, lights, plugs etc for 24k 3 years ago.

Don't ask.
If you want uninsulated/unfinished interior building with a dirt/gravel floor a pole barn is the cheapest option by far so an easy choice.
The cost difference disappears or becomes less significant when you add a full floor, insulation, finished interior.....

Rburke 65 -"The studio up now" ??????????????

Stay away from the adult beverages b4 (learned that from a teenager) you post.

So we can understand what you are trying to say.

I have make the same mistake more than once, I am not innocent of this, so I can say it.

And we need to know ballpark size you want, including height.

You said budget of 30K.

You have given other helpful info.

Main thing we see so far is you do want a concrete floor for your tools.

Keep going. Marc

The two building types are apples and oranges in many ways, so hard to compare costs.

Typically the pole barn will be taller, having more volume, but will have a roof structure that is only self supporting, with less structure than stick built. And it's foundation will be a lot less extensive and a lot less expensive than stick built where bearing walls require a continuous foundation deep enough to extend past frost depths.

Pole barn of the same height should be a lot less expensive, although when both are completely finished inside the disparity is reduced.

I built my 30x30x14 metal "garage" for about 25k...that was 4" concrete with 8"footers I believe, insulation (spray foam), electric (14) 110 outlets, (2) 220 outlets, (9) 8' fluorescent ballasts, LED exterior lighting on all corners and one in eve over driveway, all run in conduit, garage door opener, (2) windows, (1) man door, (1) real cedar 16x8 custom garage door. Wife wanted it to look like a "garage" so had soffits added as well. Love it, but I wish I would have done 30x40...it's never big enough once you get all your **** in it.

For that size I would go stick built for sure. I've been wrestling with this question for awhile, but my initial planning is for 60 x 100.

I built my 36'x30'x10' garage as a pole building. Has been cheaper so far than stick-built, but I've done everything myself. I think its been about $20k so far.

I'm not finishing the interior beyond the bare walls. I have to get the electrical inspection done this week and I should get final sign off soon after that.

To me, a pole barn type structure is designed to enclose the most volume for the least cost.

Typical residential stick built is best to keep the residential look. This is more versatile and can be made even more capable with engineered lumber and steel members. Most expensive option.

For the most versatile and best bang for the buck in the high capability arena, look to commercial type construction with red iron steel buildings. They can be designed to support loads from the roof and wall structure and if metal panel walls are used, minimal foundation costs are incurred.

If it was mine, I would use a combination of the residential and commercial to create spaces as needed for the functions they contained.

One advantage of a stick built is that you can have an upstairs storage area. Its nice to have that space to get stuff off the expensive concrete floor. In the middle of nowhere, you can make a bigger pole barn and its of no concern, but in suburbia where you probably already have a zoning variance for size, it may be critical.

Stick build also is much easier to make match the main house, which for my wife was an absolute must.

Anything with a full foundation under it will last longer than a building with poles in the ground.

There is some places that dig holes pour cement in and bolt post to them.I was in the building trade for 4 years and built both. If your going to have a cement floor build stick if dirt go pole. Its not that hard to finish a pole building. We would push owners to build stick and by the time your done its about the same money wise.

^^ Hybrids really blur the line ^^^
I've owned both pole barns and stick built garages,,, if I had it to do over I'd build a hybrid:
Concrete foundation, stick 2 x 6 walls covered in OSB, but 2 ply trusses spaced 12 ft plus for an open high bay interior for a car lift and all metal outside finish.
