Pole Barn vs Stick Frame

I have some questions about Pole Barns vs Stick Frame buildings.

I am looking at building a 48x30 detached garage. Attic (storage) trusses over 1/2, cathederal ceilings over the other. Cement floor (radiant heat), 2 16 ft doors, 1 man door and a few windows. The exterior of the garage will have to match the exterior of my house, Stucco walls and shingles on the roof. I'm going to be doing the insulating and drywalling and alot of the electrical (conduit on wall).

1) In you opinion which would you (did you) choose Pole Barns or Stick Frame and why (pros/cons)?

2) Will I be saving anything by going with a Pole Barn? Or by changing the wall finish, roof and trusses would I eat up all my savings?

Thanks!

Ummm.... well... LOOKS! No offense intended to any metal building owners.

You might save a few bucks but not enough to overcome the LOOKS!

My very unbiased opinion.

I assume that you meen that you could see the framing diffrences INSIDE the building and the wood beams would not look good?? I can tell you that you could not see the diffrence from the outside.... He want's stuco on the walls and shingles on the roof, how are you going to see the framing?

for the OP...
The advantages for the pole framed building are lower matreial cost and faster errection. The other costs are going to be the same becuse you have to sheet and stuco/shingle either. Might be a faster job finishing off the inside of the stick framed walls. I have seen lots of t11 sided/shingled pole buildings but not any stuco. However the builder could just use OSB insted of the t11, stuco wrap/lath it, and apply a standard 3 coat stuco finish. I would also look into an ICF structure made from these guys stuff www.rastra.com It's really slick fire, rot, insect, and weather proof. It is a Great system to cover with stuco.

My comments were probably reading too much into the last part of his second question. I don't know many (any) who actually put up the pole building and reroof, stucco etc and I was comparing the look of his dream to the average metal sided building. My bad! I'm just really naive, I need to get out and see more of the world.

Pole buildings have another advantage; really tall walls. Around here, stick framed walls over I believe 12' need special engineering.

I'd realy like to finish the inside of my steel framed garage, but I've given up cause its too much work and money. Therefore hanging cabinets are out.

Most people around here in Western Kentucky go with the pole barn buildings. Cheaper and as said before "taller walls". If you do not mind a metal building. Also has metal roof. I am going to have a 30'X64' pole barn building built as soon as I have the money.

Most contractors I have talked to have said there is very little cost difference between a pole building or a stick building. Since I am building mine myself, I am going with 2x4 walls. This will make it easier to insulate with a thick type insulation.

It's not even close around here....pole barn shop building is 50% to 70% less cost then stick built. You can buy a flush frame pole barn (accepts standard insulation batts), mine is going up as I type.

No it wont, but 2X6 "thick" walls will :)

I chose to build a pole barn for the lower costs involved and I was able to do 95% of the work all by myself (and my tractor).

It has taken me a while though...four years and counting....but I'm almost done.

pole barn should ALWAYS be cheaper than a stick frame.

the foundaiton costs are where all the savings are, and they are significant.

the aesthetic of a pole barn is what you make of it.
this, for instance, is the front and side elevation of my own pole barn, for which I am developing the plan set:

and here's the loft and roof framing.

I think some of you guys are talking metal-framed pole barns and others are talking wood-framed pole barns. What is the cost difference between the both of those?

Probably different regional terminology...but to me...pole building means poles buired in the ground, which i think are always wood. Steel frame building bolts to a concrete foundation or concrete pillars.

Steel framed buildings are called "red iron" due to the color of there painted frames....pole buildings use poles set into the earth...or bolted to a concrete pad...also known as "post and frame construction"....

I also went with the pole building for the $$ savings. So far I'm very happy with my garage. It's 30 x32, shingle roof, metal siding and concrete floor all for just under $19,000.00.

I am near Hershey Pa. I had a Pole building put up by "Wood Originals" out near Bethel, PA.
They did a wonderful Job to my specs. I have Sissors Trusses so my 2post lift works. Radiant heat in the floor.
Shingle Roof with overhang on all sides. The Garage matches the House ( almost). They will do whatever you want, and they can Stucco ( Drivit) the outside or whatever you want. I had them put up the Shell, and I installed the Radiant heat tubing, then they came back and fiinished the concrete floor. I insulated it, epoxied the floor finished the inside and did the electric. I am finishing up the air system right now. Overall the Pole building is cheaper.
I will try to post a few pictures after I resize them.

Here are 2 pictures during the initial construction. The side view shows the sissors truss from the side. I was able to get r30 in the ceiling and still have plenty of vent from the eaves to the vented ridge. the other shows the outside with everything they did finished.
