I am planning on building a garage with 6" concrete. Any opinions on pole versus stick build footer etc... ??? Do pole buildings endure PA winters well?? Also metal exteriors??? Any info or suggestions appreciated...
Thanks

I went with a post frame type and finished with dry wall and vinyl siding looks like stick built..Reason I did is local code would not allow a 30x30 stick built without footers, but a post type can be a lineal pour..so that made the decision easy. Also look up Perma columns..they are a concrete "post" that goes below grade, and has a "boot" on top to attach your posts to..so no underground post rot will occur..I used them here and think they are great! I had to get the ok from the local building inspector who had never seen them, now that he has he recommends them to builders..optional, but worth the money in the long haul to me..As far as the Pa winters go..a pole type should hold up fine. Look at all of the Amish built 100 year old barns out your way..

When I was looking into it, the pole barn construction seemed much more economical. Durability seemed very good based on others here in upstate NY. However, I eventually want to convert the second floor to living space, so a full foundation with footer was required, which is why I went stick-built.
