pole size

typically what size poles for a pole barn build would I need to get. Pole barn hopefully will be in the 30x50 range and I figured that I would need to set the pole up on 10' centers. What diameter poles will work for this build? I need to ask around and see if any of the utilities around here have some good used poles that I could pick up.

Depends on the height and spacing as well as wind load etc. Most pole barns are actually built with square lumber either laminated or square posts.

My building is 36x48 and 14' eve. I have 6x6 poles on a 12' center which is perty common in this country.

Well you mean to tell me that pole barns are built with square lumber? LOL I havent paid that much attention to them. I have a old pole barn that is actually built with poles but it is weak from age and also poorly built.

I plan on having 12 high side walls and go from there with the roof, probably a low pitch roof around 4-12 pitch

The original pole barns were indeed built with round poles.
But they were pretty breezy.

As people wanted them to be more weather proof the need for better joints made the switch to squared poles easier than cutting flats on round poles.

If you are just after a shed to keep stuff out of the weather round poles are fine.
If you are looking for an alternative to a tight, stick built building, squared off poles will make the carpenter work easier.

Around here there is a big difference between “telephone poles” and “power poles.”
Telephone poles are shorter and smaller. 8 to 12 inch dia and around 20 to 25 feet when cut off at ground level.
Power poles are 15 to 24 inch dia and 40 to 60 feet long when cut off.

Remember, you are going down at least 4 feet into the ground when shopping.

I have 6x6 poles on 8ft centers. Mine is 14ft tall and 36x56. Go with laminated post if you can. They last longer are straighter, stronger, and they were the exact same price. Go to this web site you can build your building with options and such and it will spit out a price, and its free delivery. The kit was better priced than anything local. Its a really nice kit also it has all needed parts and hardware it even come with quickcrete for post footings.

If I was putting up a 30x50, I'd be using atleast 6x6 posts. Even if the plans said 4x6s would work, I'd prefer the heavier lumber.

I used 6X6 post 10' on center. My building is a 40X40X12'.
