Polished Concrete - worth it ??

I have been researching floors. I was planning on epoxy, but I got a rough quote on polishing my 1,000 sq ft slab. Provided the guy can start with a certain grit polish wheel, he said $2.50 / sq ft. So it would cost around $2,500 for my garage.

I can epoxy the floor myself to $750 to $1,000, with me doing 100% of the work.

I like the polished idea, because this is a working garage. I plan on completeing my frame off restoration when I finally finish my garage. Still doing roofing work at this point.

My question, is the polished cocrete floor better than the epoxy, at 2.5 times the cost?

I would really like to hear from anyone who had their garage's concrete polished.

Thanks is advance

The slip factor is not an issues, my garage does not get wet, except when I drive a wet car into it. In Georgia, it rarely snow, so I do not have ice melt puddles.

I am looking at the polished floor are a better, tougher floor than epoxy. I does not get scratched as easy and cleans just as easy as epoxy. (sweep, damp mop, done...)

If water puddles are a problem, I would just squeege the floor anyway. If Home Depot and Lowes do not have a problem with polished floors, I do not see me as having a problem.

Keep in mind, the floor system Home Depot (and I assume Lowes) uses is not just polished concrete. It is a combination of griding/polishing and acid treatment that actually hardens the surface and makes it more stain resistant (but it will still stain).

i didn't think polishing concrete would let it stain.. you are basically filling in all the pores.. so any liquid should stay on top of it... thats why they are slippery.. i have been looking into doing this also.. i do a lot of cutting and welding and dont think epoxy would hold up well over time.

Any more info on the staining?

If you spill oil on concrete, no matter how fast you wipe it up it leaves a stain.

Will a polished concrete floor prevent this? Could you spill some oil on a polished concrete floor come back the next day and wipe it up and leave no soaked in stain?

I am really thinking about going with the polished concrete floor also.

Seems pretty spendy for grinding a floor. I had my 2500 sq. ft. garage slab professionally steel shot-blasted and two coats of solvent-based industrial epoxy (www.homeprofloors.com) seven years ago, turnkey, for $1.92/sq. ft. (don't know what the cost would be today).
