About 8 years ago I had my garage floor polished. The results were quite good, but due to eflorescence the finish became hazed and was troublesome. I tried just about everything and had pretty much given up however was told to use a Twister pad on a burnisher. I cleaned the floor and applied Ameripolish stain sealer, let it dry and then ran the burnisher. (LP powered) In a single pass the floor looked great; two passes it looked like new.

JBL, nice job!! How Hard is it to polish a floor? My father has been a mechanic for 30+ years, and over this period of time worked in a couple ford garages. They always had polished floors, always easy to clean and held up to the most extreme conditions. Now that i have he place were I want my kids to grow up I would like to do this to my garage. Is this a something's guy can tackle themselves? For what it is worth my garage is about 2000 ft^2, basically a large 3 stall with an oversized RV bay on the side. The slabs are now ~6years old.

What are the steps to complete a quality polished floor?

66Dave:

Initially grinding, filling imperfections in the floor, polishing using ascending levels of diamond fortified tooling, densification at certain points, high speed burnishing at the end, as the OP mentioned.

The equipment is expensive to rent, tooling is expensive to buy. The Diamabrush system is the least expensive but what will you do with it after the 2000 sq ft is complete?

I would not have tackled the initial grind/polish on my own; that was hired out. THe floor was supposedly densified, but I would not know if it wasn't. If I continue to have the issue I assume I can apply the densifier at any time?

I rented an LLP burnisher for $110/day and bought one of the Twister pads for $45. WIth the cost of fuel I had just under $200 in the polish.

Jbl, you may have to repeat from time to time.

It is a great process but not maintenance free as many folks will tell you.

66dave - recent post from a GJ member in Texas shows turn-key cost at around $2.5k per 1000 sq.ft. give or take. Not sure about DIY route but interested as well.

Yes, I figure it is probably an annual job. If I could find a burnisher at a reasonable cost I would do it more often.
