polishing concrete

Hi

There are so many threads on epoxy, por 15, paint, tiles etc. Is polishing simply boring? It seems that most of the ppl here are using jack stands, welding, fluid changes etc. Why isn't polishing concrete (ie sanding from coarse to fine) discussed more? In our new garage build I'm looking at a lightly coloured concrete and then hope to have it polished to a "Home depot" smoothness. Doesn't need much care, won't lift under a hot tire, can take fluid spills, etc etc.

Does anyone already have this done?

There are a couple threads on it. I think the main thing that stops people is the expense. However, I did epoxy in my "working" garage and really am not pleased with it for the reasons that you mention. Perhaps at some point I will strip it and look into polishing.

I'm finishing a project at work where all of the welding and fabrication shop areas have a diamond polished floor. They stopped at the 4th or 5th step (of 5 or 6). So far, the floors look great and are holding up to their traffic - heavy construction equipment. The only thing I don't like is that almost need ice skates if the floors are wet. Due to the size of the areas our client had, I want to say that they paid around $3 a square foot to have it done.

With both epoxy and polished floors I'm more worried about slipping and falling if anything wet is on the floor or shoes. We have epoxy at some places at work that you walk like you are on ice because there are always spots of oil or coolant that get on the floor.
At home I just put a sealer on it and called it good. I figured with a epoxy or polished floor that something would fall or get dragged across it and damage it.
